This is probably stupid question...


Why does damage to the heart cause depolarization?

cells need to be intact and have a decent energy source to maintain Na/K-atpase pumps. otherwise the gradient decreases and the cell depolarizes.

You could also get membrane damage and thus unregulated ion diffusion thus eliminating the gradient.
