heat of hydration

Yeah I am not sure either - it is either heat released when something reacts with water or heat released when you hydrate ions.

Was there an MCAT question involving this concept you could post?
 
i am not sure when i found the word...but this is what i've found online

"Heat of hydration or enthalpy of hydration of ions corresponds to the heat that is released by hydration of one mole of ions at a constant pressure. The more the ion is hydrated, the more heat is released. Degree of hydration depends on the size and charge of ion. The smaller the ion and the greater its charge, it will be the more hydrated."
 
small atoms have less room to stabilize charge by spreading it out. this makes then bond more strongly to water resulting in greater heats of hydration.
