Hello guys, I am currently a sophomore in stonybrook college in NY, I was under the premed/predental track but I'm thinking about trying to become a pharmacist. I am just very confused and I looked around and couldn't get all my answers... What's the steps needed and when do I take the pcat test? I took gen chem, bio, calc, orgo.. And have around a gpa around 3.4ish. What are my chances and is it okay if ur school doesn't have pharmacy as a major?? I am just very confused. Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Ideally you want to take the PCAT the Summer you are applying (September at the latest), so schools will have your scores sooner than later. The earlier you apply to pharmacy school the better because schools have a rolling admissions process.

For study material I recommend the Collins study packet. You can find it on here for about $100.

A 3.4 GPA is great. Make sure you also volunteer at a pharmacy to gain exposure and also to receive a LOR from the pharmacist.

PharmCAS is where you can research all the schools you want to apply to and to actually submit your application to pharmacy schools.

PM me if you have any other questions or simply post here.

Good luck! 👍

Thank you so much for the feedback. When do most people apply to pharmacy schools? In what year. Also, are there prerequisite courses you have to take?? So I'm guessing I should study for the post over this coming summer and take it??

Most pharmacy schools do not require a degree as long as you complete their prerequisite requirements. However, to be truly competitive it may be a good idea to obtain your bachelors. Technically, yes, you can apply for the 2014 cycle and be admitted without a degree.

Each school has their own specific prerequisite requirements (besides the basic sciences), so I would recommend going to PharmCAS's website to learn more about each school.

If you have taken the necessary courses to take the PCAT then I see no reason why you should not take it this Summer.

This was very helpful for me because I also am transitioning to pharmacy and I don't know to much about it! I'm also getting my pharmacy tech diploma in the fall while getting my degree in biology (But thinking about changing it to pre-pharmacy) but is that smart?

It couldn't hurt to have pharm tech experience. Many people who apply to pharm school do have that. I didn't but I also have no interest at the moment to work in community pharmacy.
