Hello all,
I am a senior in High-School and I have a question or two. I would like to go into Pharmacy and work my way through the education to get into PharmD and become a Pharmacist. My question is, what classes should I take and what would be the best subject to major in? I know Pharmacy can branch of into other areas as well, such as Pediatrics, etc. Which I am also looking into more. This really looks like a great job and I've checked SDN, Pharmacists.com, AACP, etc. But, I would like to hear from people such as yourself and your opinions (why I am here). Thank You. 🙄

Hi there! To answer your question, it really depends on which school you're applying. Some schools only require two years of pre-reqs at any accredited university before applying into their 3 or 4 year PharmD program. As long as you complete the pre-reqs determined by whichever school you're applying, you're set. Even if you're applying to a more competitive school where most of the applicants have a bachelor's degree, the same applies. While having a major in science helps in pharmacy school, a non-science major will not put you at a significant disadvantage.

I'm not familiar with how the six year programs work, but I believe those have a pre-set curriculum that you have to follow in order to complete their program.

I chose to be a chemistry major at first but ochem made me change my mind, now I'm a Microbiology. It really doesn't matter what major you choose because you should be focusing on getting your prereqs done, unless you want to get a bachelor degree first before applying for pharmacy school. It's not required that you have to have a degree before applying, although it would be beneficial. I know many people who never claimed a major during their prereqs. Of course it's recommended that you major in science since it'll be most relevant and helpful while you're in pharmacy school.

As for the classes you should take, you have to check with the schools you're planning to apply and find out their exact prereqs. Also talk to your counselors. I don't know about your future college but at mine, we have a health professions orientation and I would recommend taking that easy course if they offer it. It'll expose you to all kinds of health professions and what you need to do to prepare for it.

One thing to consider, that I wish someone had told me when I was a high school senior, is there are some pharmacy program that'll admit you from HS straight to pharmacy work, like NEU in Boston. It is a 6 yrs program where you do not have to apply after you're done with your prereqs - you're automatically accepted to their pharmacy school; they only make you take the classes pertaining to pharmacy.

I would suggest doing some research. At my school, we have a 6 yrs program (2 years prereqs and 4 years of pharmacy school) but it's phasing out. They want us to do 3 years prereqs now to be more prepared.

if you are a senior in highschool, you should apply to the schools with 0-6 program with a pre-pharmacy major. IMHO in this case you have more chances of getting into the professional phase, rather then doing 2 or 3 years of prereqs somewhere and then applying to 10-15 schools as a transfer.

Yes, I took that into consideration. I live in FL. and the only school that I saw that had the 6 Year Program was FAMU. I'll have to check into them more. I was thinking about (planned) going to UCF since I already applied there and get my pre-reqs. done. Transfer up to OSU (become resident after 6 months?) But during that time of residency I can go and hopefully get some experience under my belt for a pharmacy in a grocery store or just a reg. pharmacy or so, such as Kroger Grocery Store for example. I still have to check into all the programs offered for Walgreens, CVS, Publix, etc. (There is a Thread up about that already that I have been reading). So far, How does this sound? 🙄

It is unlikely that you will gain residency at OSU in 6 months unless you are transfering for military reasons. Most schools are very stingy about granting in-state unless you can prove you are not just there for school.

Unless you arent sure you want to really go into pharmacy I would look into the 6 year programs. if you are wanting to move out of state anyway, look at other states programs. SWSOU has a very good one. But the downside is, you have to come to Oklahoma. 😉

True, I forgot to mention though. If I get into OSU, I'm going to grab a B.S. in Pharmaceuticals then transfer into their Pharmacy program. I chose Ohio because I have family up there and then of course family here in FL.
