Hi, everyone! I'm new to SDN, but I just wanted to jump on here and hopefully get some information from you guys. Does anyone know of any current (2015) statistics for the average GPA and GRE scores of all physical therapy students accepted in 2014?

Here's the deal:
I'm a senior at a university in Tennessee with a major in Biology. I am graduating in May 2016. I am a pre-medical student, but I am very seriously considering applying to DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) programs as well as DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) programs in August. All of the schools and programs I am looking at for DPT are located in Georgia, S. Carolina, N. Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Florida. I'm applying to at least a dozen schools to increase my chances of getting in at least one, and I'm not applying to anywhere incredibly competitive or unrealistic.

My current overall GPA is a 3.1
I know my GPA is very low, but I'm hoping my test scores and extracurricular activities/interviews will help.
My grades for the most common pre-requisite classes are as follows:

Biology I- A
Biology II- B

Chemistry I- C
Lab- B
Chemistry II- C
Lab- B

Statistics- A

Psychology I- A
Abnormal Psychology- A

Anatomy- B
Physiology- C

Physics I- C
Physics II- B

I also have really good GRE scores. I scored in the top 85th percentile.

Extracurricular Activities:
500 volunteer hours at hospitals, clinics, and marathons/5k runs
200 hours as a research assistant
Chairman of Student Athletics for my university
Member of 2 honors societies

So, based on last year's statistics and personal experience/advice, what are my chances of getting into at least one DPT program?

Thanks, all!

Hey!

Definitely retake some classes multiple Cs will be a red flag. Don't apply and waste money. If you need more direction PM me or check out my blog dptknow.tumblr.com . I was in your position before so I understand!

Thanks! I think I have time to re-take Physics I and Chemistry I to get better grades. I know I can get an A in both. Would that help? Or should I re-take Physiology and Physics instead? Which would be considered more important? I could probably only get a B in Physiology if I re-take it.

I know for the University of Tennessee, where I'll be starting in the fall, the average GPA is around a 3.7 and around a 305 GRE. Your chances would be greatly improved if you retook those C's.

Why do you think you couldn't get an A in physiology? If it's because the course is difficult at your school, then take it over at a community college. Very few PT schools have a problem with that. Physiology is a pretty seriously important class for PT.

Congratulations! UT is actually my current school, so I know the stats and the people I'll be competing against, which I why I won't be applying there. A lot of the Health and Human Performance majors here apply for our program, and their classes tend to be greatly easier than the biology department's version of the courses, so I know I can't compete. I wish I could retake all of the C's, but I don't much time to re-do very many, maybe 2 at best.

It's very expensive to take Physiology at my local community college. It's much less expensive to take it at my university (I'm on scholarships). If I re-took Phys, I could probably only get a B because of my additional course load that I have to take into account, and it really is very difficult with my department. I've tried taking it with the Health and Human Performance department, but they won't let me. There are too many HHP majors to accommodate.

Sounds like those classes are not in the general science department and could not be used as science courses. I would recommend the sticky at the top of the forum. It contains applicant data from the past few years. A great resource when seeing where you stack up and schools to apply.

IMO From the looks of your stats, you will need to retake more than 2 courses and get A's to be competitive. A 3.1 cumulative gpa is a hindrance from a lot or programs, but a 2.89 prereq will not let you apply to almost all programs due to their cut-offs. If you can apply, chances are very slim. As far as your physiology, I would take it over again and in the biology department.

A lot of negative in my post, but you can do it! A great GRE will help. Retake your prereq's. It won't be fun and you'll be in school longer but it will be worth it and much much easier in the long run.

Sorry, my last post seemed kind of confusing, now that I look at it. All of the classes I've taken were in general biology, chemistry, and physics departments, since I'm a Biology major. Thanks for the info! I'll definitely re-take Physics I. My Anatomy grade isn't set in stone, yet, I think I can pull it up to an A by the end of the summer. Hopefully that will help. I'll also consider re-taking Physiology. I'll just have to see what next year brings. Thanks, again!

So that everyone knows, this thread was double posted in pre-PT (see the other thread from today by the OP) and also posted in PT.

OP, please do not cross-post or double post.

Every program is "incredibly competitive" to get into. You need to get that pGPA up to at least a 3.5 or your chances are very bad. When you apply you need to research your programs well and apply to those that weigh the GRE higher or the last 60 units higher.

I would reconsider not applying to UTHSC. I also went to UT and had a similar cumulative GPA and Cs in chemistry. I was accepted to a program and there were definitely other candidates that had a better resume than I. I know they say the don't give preference to UT students, but I think they do.
