I just got an email that I was accepted to U of Syd Dental!!
So excited !! super excited because I have been waiting for this acceptance letter over years and finally!!

Here's my problem. I have only a few days to pay the deposit and full tuition soon as well. Does anyone have an info where I can ask about student loan for the oversea school? I know there's a website of australian dental school forum like here. If you know, please let me know.

Also if there's anything I should know or keep in mind, I d really appreciate!

How did you manage to get accepted there? Sounds interesting to me.

Congrats! I don't know anything about that school or how the transfer back to US would work...I'm assuming you'd have to go into the IDS program if you decided to come back to the US? Perhaps put down your deposit if you need to, but wait to hear back from the other US schools you applied to? I know you're waiting on UNE, and that seems like rolling. But I know at ASDOH, if you've been accepted to another university, they ask you to tell the ADCOM that so they can tell you if you're likely to be accepted to ASDOH or not, in case you don't wanna put the money down for the other place.

Congrats though!

Pretty much same step as here.

I was surprised by this acceptace as well!! never expected because the school starts on the beginning of Feb. I was notice that I got waitlisted last year but just got an email that I was released

I will def. put down a deposit like tom. and wait little bit more but don't have much time to wait because school starts soooo soon.
i wonder if there's a way to come back here in US after getting a DMD degree there . or trasnfer to US dental after a couple of years of studying there and getting a degree here.
Another q is that I am a permanent resisdent and now applyin to get a citizenship. How this thing is gonna work.

Oh another thing...schoool loan.. will US education privide a loan for syd dental tuition..

I would love the opportunity to study in Australia! However, if your goal is to practice here in the United States then it hardly makes sense to get a dental degree in Australia then compete for admission again for entrance into an IDP here, which by the way is probably more competitive than gaining a normal spot to begin with. There are probably some loopholes, though, which would allow you to complete a GPR / AEGD in certain states and become licensed.

Australia and the US have been working on a reciprocal agreement much like the one between the US and Canada. The Australian dental schools are slowly changing their programs to mimic ours here so that the agreement will be finalized. Down under, they do it a little bit differently. Right out of high school, students apply to programs to obtain their bachelors in dental surgery. They can practice after completing the program and whatever the equivalent to the boards are over there. With a bachelors in dental surgery, you most likely won't be able to practice in the US. They do offer DMD programs in which you have to have a college degree and the requirements completed, which are very similar to those here. The programs themselves aren't new, but they are being altered drastically and the name of the program is new. I believe university of Melbourne just offered the program under the DMD title last year for the first time. So yes, you are right that as of right now you will not be able to practice in the US right after graduation. But I would not be surprised if the reciprocal agreement was finalized in 4-5 years.

I don't know anything about the politics and agreement but even if reciprocal agreement is finalized, isn't that only effective to the graduates after the year of agreement? Let say if the agreement is set up in year of 2018, then isn't class of 2018 (or 2019) is the staring class to freely practice in US with Australian degree under the agreement?

Pleas correct me, I am wrong! In fact, I am very interested in this topic.

I have no idea. I know Australia is a popular place to study abroad, so I think they are very eager to finalize the agreement in hopes to attract even more international students. I'm not sure which classes would be able to practice though.

I looked into applying to some schools in Australia and thought about practicing there for a few years, but they didn't accept my anatomy and physiology prereq because it was a combo class, which is how they typically offer it around here

I, too, have been accepted to the University of Sydney. Both the University of Sydney and University of Melbourne offer DMD degrees. However, since you're American, and Australia and the US don't have a reciprocal agreement yet, you're going to have a difficult time coming back to the US to work. This might change down the road but if you don't plan on staying in Australia you'll have to go into an advanced placement program. If you have the choice between a US school and U Syd, choose the US school.
I have friends who went to the University of Sydney who have had problems coming back to Canada to work and they have had the agreement going on for a number of years now.

Our family dentist went to the same school and is from the states. I'm sure he would be happy to answer questions if you emailed him or something.
He is a very friendly guy.

The reciprocal program or something other people are talking about hasn't been approved, so you gotta be really careful about that. So as of right now, I'M ASSUMING that you'd have to come back and apply for the IDS program, which is also killer to get into. And to get into that, you'll have to take NBDE part 1, and maybe 2, but part 1 for sure.

US federal loans will not be applicable to you outside of the US, I think. I'm not 100% sure though. I do think you will have to take private loans from a bank, either in the US or Australia.

My suggestion to you would be, first thing tomorrow morning, please call every school you've interviewed at (I know you interviewed at UNE) and tell them that you are seriously considering going to University of Sydney starting in Feb. Try to find out if they will be accepting you soon (this is hard because you can't be pushy either) so then you can determine whether USyd is a good choice for you or not. Worst case scenario would be you end up going to USyd, and then come back a few months later if you do get into US school.

Maybe other people members have suggestions on how best to handle this situation with US schools' adcoms?

Thx for reply. I would def. call the schools I interviewed for some info tomorrow mourning.
I see it would be hard to come back after finishing the program at USyd.. which is my biggest concern. According to the above comments, if reciprocal program will be successful in near future, it would prob. reduce my hesitation now.. but now I feel like I have to leave my family behind.. also about loan for the school, I see, on their acceptance letter, a way to get loans from us gov so i don;t think this would be a prob (not sure though because i haven't really checked it yet)

I applied to us dentals of course, which is my primary, and had interview as well.

But I havent heard anything yet since then, which,I guess 'waitlisted'.

The chance, at this point of time, seems quite pessimistic. I will call schools tom mourning.
