Hi everybody! This is my very first post and I am in need of a little help. I am weighing up both schools and they both have their pros and cons. I did the graduate program through NJMS and loved it! Great school, but I am also accepted at Albany which is much closer to my family and has a great pediatrics hospital which I am interested in. The financial costs are also of a concern but a relative recently offered to pay the difference so that I wouldn't have to have that keep me out of Albany...So I know I am very very lucky, and I don't want to gripe, but I need a little bit of feedback...Thank you!

I think that NJ Med has a generally better reputation but you already knew that, but if you want to stay in Albany postgraduate you may just want to go there now, though going to NJ Med likely won't preclude that from happening.

Albany is also safer. University Hospital and the DOC are not really safe areas and are one reason I ranked UMDNJ lower on my final rank list for residency.

But all in all you are indeed one lucky Celt. :luck:

It sounds like you like Albany better. If its the prestige thats making you think twice, pick Albany. If you were weighing [insert your favorite top-ten school here], it might be a different story, but the prestige differential is marginal, at best.

I ultimately picked my state school over several other more 'prestigious' oos [read: expensive] options b/c I knew I'd 1) get a great education and experience 2) be much happier closer to my SO and family and 3) wouldn't have to worry about $$ (doesn't apply with your scenario).

Good luck!

NJMS is cool, I like it. But if you'll be happier near your family, by all means go there. As a first year this year, being near my family was KEY. Priceless to me...

Thanks to everyone for their quick responses, being that I only posted today! Keep them coming!

I would also appreciate, if you have gone there or are planning on going there, why? What did you love/hate? Etc...

Thanks again everyone, I love this community!

Staying near family is important. Most people say that the first year is really stressful, so it could definetely help to have some moral support. And Newark is not the most beautiful place around I would say.

They didn't let me take a tour of the peds hospital, but from what I heard, it was ok (then again, I work in one of the best peds hospitals in the US).

I liked Albany when I was there. The students, faculty, and staff have all been very helpful and enthusiastic, and considering I'm going to work with them for 4 years, that's a big plus (and for those who say this isn't big, then you haven't had a job where you've had to work with jerks). Family nearby is a big plus too.

Reputation is what you make of it. There are plenty of opportunities to do what you want where ever you go. Doubtless you have connections with faculty at NJMS, but there's a strong MDDR (MD with research distinction) program at Albany, and RPI being nearby provides many interesting possibilities.

either there are a lot of NJMS students students here or the stats speak for themselves

I'm just finishing up my second year at Albany and really like the school. I think the faculty and other students are generally pretty good to work with and it isn't a super competative atmosphere. Of the places I interviewed I definatly got the best vibe from Albany, but that is different for everybody. I didn't interview at NJ so I can't speak to the differences. I think the location is Albany's biggest downfall, but I came from the west coast and am now far from family. If your family is in the area it doesn't sound like that is a problem for you. If you have more questions feel free to PM me, but you probably wouldn't regret either school so go where you feel you will have a better experience and don't wory about cost, reputation ect...

I'm a second year at NJMS right now and I really like it there. The thing that I like the best is the students. Everyone gets along really really well and is always willing to help each other out, school wise or not. I've heard way too many stories of schools where people just care about themselves and even go out of their way to propel themselves at the expense of others. At NJMS I personally guarantee that that doesn't happen. Not only are people friendly, but people are genuine friends to be had. Not clique-ish at all.

Aside from that, we start out clinical exposure in the first couple weeks. That means you're actually seeing, speaking with, helping with patients from day 1 (or maybe 14). There are few schools that offer that.

I also wanted to comment on what people said about being close to family. I agree that family is very important but, for me at least, not a necessity of having close proximity during med school. For instance, now that I'm very close by my fmaily expects to see me quite often (at least once a week) and doesn't quite "get" the demands that med school bestows on you. Again, to each his own.

Finally, the cost difference between the schools is HUGE! NJMS is around 23K and Albany is in the high 30'sK. I don't know about you, but a 50K difference isn't anything to scoff at.

Best of luck with your decision and maybe I'll be seeing you around NJMS.

I really appreciate all of your help! I am still struggling to decide especially since my long term s.o. may come over and as a physician(foreign) will probably have an easier time with all the hospitals near the Newark area! I know all logic points to NJMS, but I sometimes feel like it's just the wrong choice...Then I have also been reading about all the troubles at NJMS and that makes me concerned too! I totally feel like I am whining, but I need more input..PLEASE!!!! Thanks again everyone!

When are you planning to decide by?

hey, the troubles are really with UMDNJ admin, not with NJMS as a school. The school itself just recieved a FULL 8 year accredidation ( i prolly spelled tat wrong) from the LCME, so they aint comin back for a while. Education is not affected by "scandal" and remember the dental school is different from the medical school. Besides the residency matches really speak for themselves. Year after year, we get really good spots. The decision is yours.

new jersey for sure. it's not THAT far from albany, and besides it's not like you're gonna have all the time in the world to see your family. you'll still be close enough to go home for a weekend after exams and for all the holidays and such. you'll probably feel more independent in NJ too. however, i don't know you personally so if you're the type that flourishes with a little pampering, then go albany.

listen to your gut. the last thing you want is to go to a school where you look back and think "damn, i should have went somewhere else"

Albany Med... I love it here... I lived in newark and it was ghetto, so now I hate new jersey in general.... Albany is great, the people are nice, the faculty is supportive, housing is cheep, and you can live within walking distance... about albany being boring... only boring people are bored

i thnk the op must have made up his/her decision...
