Hello all,

I am a foreign trained dentist from India and I came in USA in 2008, I have given NBDE Part 1 and my score was not what I expected (Stats are below). I still have a chance to give part 1.

NBDE part 1 = 79
TOEFL = 98
BDS GPA = 3.94
MPH GPA = 3.78
7 months research experience with the local health department
5 months Dental observer-ship experience from two dentists in USA
Volunteer experience with the long term facility, part time evaluator at the state university. Lots of projects related to dentistry during my MPH.

I am confused what should I do. Should I give part 1 again or should i give part II????? I have a time frame till September 2011.

I would appreciate some suggestions and I thank in advance to all the aspiring dentists, dental students and dentist for their time and concern.

thanks again

First of all, your credentials are very good. MPH and work experience and excellent GPA too. The only thing is you haven't crossed an '80' in NBDE 1. if you have registered for part 1 again, then i think you should take it. since u have already prepared for it once, 3 months is more than enough. Good luck!

I dont get it! How is it possible for the OP to retake NBDE part 1 if he/she has already passed the exam with a score of 79? It is my understanding that since Jan '10 retakes are not allowed once someone has cleared the exam.Or am I getting it wrong?

Thank you Dr. International,
Thanks for the advice.
Appreciate it

@ddspcds...you are welcome!

actually 'make you smile' has a point...are you eligible to write again?

You should check your eligibility letter again ddspcds. Once you register, you are allowed only 12 months from the date of the letter to take the exam. After 12 mnths, the eligibility expires and you cannot take the exam. You say u registered before Jan 2010. its already May 2011. Hence the question. thanks.

Thank 'you' and 'make you smile' for the concern, as I wrote in earlier posts that the question was what to give, I have done my homework regarding writing the part 1 eligibility, so that question is out of context.
Hope this clear the air.
Again I appreciate your concern and help

Thanks

Did not mean to interrogate, I am sorry if i sounded that way. I think everyone still has doubts about this Part 1 reexamination and lot of questions regarding that still. Failing the exam is the only way to register again, that's what is known now. I thought it will be helpful if you can share something you know. After all isnt that the purpose of this forum. That's all. Its up to you. There is no air to be cleared, rest assured.

Why would you say sorry for anything, again as I wrote earlier that my question was to either give part 1 or part 2? And to which I got the sound advice and I thank you for that. As far as the rule is concerned it is still the same that all those who appeared after Jan'10 cannot give part 1 again if he/she passed it. My case was bit different or may be similar to others as I never gave in 2010 and as of yet in 2011. So my eligibility was still valid, I called them and asked for the same and they said I can reapply for the eligibility and then can take a date.
There is not a question of me not sharing anything, I totally understand how difficult things are.
Thanks

thanks ddspcds and asd1234 for your comments.

What you said totally makes sense, asd1234. Wow, thats some strategy to retake! Would have never thought of that.
According to OP, if you pass your exam in 2009 or before, then you are still eligible for a retake. If you pass in 2010..and onwards, then you are stuck with your scores. that makes sense too.
So...that means, none of us know exactly how things work with the ADA haha..

Anyone else with the same experience??

Just wanted to clarify for you what some of my friends did. They took their part 1 on december 30, 2009 and reapplied for eligibility on december 31, 2009. so since you can only take your test after 90 days from the last test they can only book a date after march 31, 2010 so from march 31, 2010 to march 31, 2011 they could take it from any time in that time period. But other than that no one is allowed retakes no matter when they took their exam before 2010 or after. So don't worry no one is allowed to retake unless they did that. Some of my friends were disappointed also when they thought they could retake it whenever they want but eligibility only lasts one year no matter when you take it. Hope this helps you.

I second it! One of my friends did exactly the same thing.She took the exam on Dec. 28th 2009 and registered for the exam on 31st dec.2009 as she was scared if she would get the score that she wanted.So she would have the eligibility to take it again by Mar 2011.But she never needed to because she got an 89 on NBDE part 1.Anyone can throw more light on this?

international trained students need to hit 80. i guess this is an excellent example of a double standard.

I'm foreign dentist from India.I came to canada. I want to give exams for canada (NDEB). Please help me for that. What stuff do i need to study? What stuff i hav to buy? Please help me?

DDSPCDS is correct. If you have taken pt1 prior to Jan 2010 and havn't registered to retake yet then you can still rewrite until 2012. I actually am reregistering my rewrite for Sept as well. We have the same score on pt.1...
