I was doing a little bit of homework on the acceptance rate of schools out of state. I'm a California native, and as such, I am blessed/cursed with the fact that I do not need to take the PCATs. I initially assumed I would apply to several schools out of California in order to maximize my chances of getting into a pharmacy school right out of college after I attain my B.S. in MCD bio. However, looking at some numbers, I've pretty much come to the conclusion that is is rather pointless to do so, unless you have more money than you know what to do with, and you are willing to invest time/money to studying for the PCATs. I'm not sure if the University of Texas School of Pharmacy statistics should be used as an example for the assumptions I am making(because according to US News it is ranked as #2 in the nation), but it is the only site I could find so far with specifics on out of state admissions. Here is the link to the general stats for the school of pharmacy at UT:

Here's the link to the more specific site describing entrance % of 2004 students:

I read in another forum that school's prefer to keep students that are from the same state, for whatever reasons it might be (monetary or whatever) and I do believe these statistics support that argument. For the year of 2004, only 3% of students were admitted from out of state, and this is not specifically for California (which means the numbers to represent the students strictly from my state would be drastically lower).

Don't get me wrong, I'm really passionate about the idea of going into pharmacy school, but I think the numbers speak volumes in showing how unlikely it is for out of state students to get admitted into a school. In order for you guys to get to understand where I am coming from, I am currently a fourth year UCSC student with a 3.26 cumulative GPA and I have been involved in volunteering in the ER at a nearby hospital. I also volunteer at SCAP(a needle exchange site), RCU at the hospital, I shadow 2 physicians(one does internal medicine, another does general surgery), and just yesterday I was blessed enough to get started as a volunteer at the hospital pharmacy(another volunteer had gotten into pharmacy school and I was more than happy to fill in for him!). I understand my GPA is not very competitive, but I am hoping I can win over the interviewers when the time arises, and with my volunteer/pharmacy work.

Anyway, I figured that as sad as it might be to get rejected from all California schools (I'm hoping I won't!-- I have my fingers crossed..), that it could turn into a good thing. I could take the year off and kick it with the parents and just volunteer full time at UCSF (back at home) and work as a pharmacy technician(I will get my test results in just 2 more days...)

The future of my life rests in your hands(sort of)! I really respect the camaraderie and help from everyone on this forum, and I would love to hear what you guys think(especially from those who have applied or gotten into out of state schools).
