SO... just wanted an opinion on my chances of being a DO and a couple questions i will number:
1. my stats are 3.6 overall gpa, 3.3 science gpa. I retook Genetics, GEN chem I, and Microbiology. My MCATS are 30. I am president of a religious club, and president of a premed club. I am also a member of a male organization, a biological honor society, psych club, and service cor. member. I will also go abroad and volunteer in local hospitals. I have volunteered about 600 hours in the ER in a hospital, and about 100 hours shadowing a MD at John's Hopkins. What are my chances of a DO match? Such as Chicago, or NYC DO schools.
2. Do retakes look bad on a application? and do all DO schools replace retaken course grades or only select do?
3. I was going to get my LOR from my orgo professor, a MD fellow, and a DO doctor. What other recommendations look strong?
Please let me know!! I take opinions very seriously!

1. Your stats are fine. CCOM, Touro NY, and NYIT are all very competitive. You're not a guarantee or anything, but you have a decent shot. NYIT has a fairly heavy in-state bias and they seem to like research experience more than most DO schools, so unless you're from New York, your chances there are lower than the other 2. CCOM and Touro NY are high stat schools. Your cGPA and MCAT are about at their average, and your sGPA is below it. You do have pretty good ECs, which helps. Apply broadly. Don't put all of your eggs in the Chicago/NYC basket. You have a chance there, but apply elsewhere as well.

2. Retakes aren't an issue. TCOM is the only DO school that doesn't use grade replacement, as Texas uses its own application service.

3. You'll need, at minimum, two LORs from science professors. Some schools require 3. At least one school (NSU) requires at least one non-science letter, and another (PCOM) prefers it. Does your school have a pre-health adviser/committee? If so, you can get a LOR from them and not need to meet the schools' individual professor LOR requirements (but having a letter from your orgo professor would still be advisable).

1.So my college does have a committee. But i am fuzzy about what they do. Can you help me clarify what the job of the prehealth committee is? and who sits in the commitee?
2. Thank you for the response! I AM BUILDING MY EC'S, and Chicago and NYC is only my top choices, I will apply everywhere lol.

Honestly, I don't know what pre-medical/health/professional committees do because I did not have one. I used professor LORs and a one from a DO. I just know that some schools require a LOR from a pre-medical adviser. Some are more lenient (i.e. you can use either a pre-medical committee OR professors). Here are a few examples:

NSU: A letter of recommendation from the pre-professional committee, (no other variations of this will be accepted) or if such a committee does not exist then three letters of recommendation are needed (two from a science professors and one non-science letter).

RowanSOM: A premedical committee letter or two science faculty letters

Touro NY: An evaluation from a pre-professional advisory committee, OR two letters of recommendation from science faculty familiar with your academic work.

CCOM:
Two letters of recommendation
  • One letter from either a premedical advisory committee, prehealth advisor or basic science professor who has taught the applicant
  • Second letter from either a U.S. licensed D.O. or an M.D. Letters from osteopathic physicians are strongly recommended. Letters written by immediate family members are not acceptable
