I'll be attending Maryland for the same reasons you mentioned! As far as oral surgery at maryland one of the students who was showing us around had oral surgery residency interviews lined up and got a ton of experience at the level one trauma center next to the dental school doing a clerkship there. Maryland is a really good school and is actually known well in dentistry (it was after all the first dental school). If it was me I would go to maryland. Their technological advances for me and their beautiful facilities were amazing. The only reason I didn't go was distance, but if I was from the east coast I'd go in a heartbeat. I don't know about the other schools though but that's just my view of Maryland!
Congrats!I'll be attending Maryland for the same reasons you mentioned!
If you have family already there, would it make it easier?I just put my deposit down for Columbia! Also, the dean which made Maryland the great school with fancy facilities is now the dean at Columbia. And from all the students during my interview day told me that the dean plans on doing the same thing to Columbia. Also Columbia just revamped their pre-clinical curriculum. In addition, a new building is being built and will be ready just in time for next fall. I also like the fact that all the health professions are all next to each other in Columbia. Mingling and socializing with other professions should be a fun time.
Also, all the pros you mentioned convinced me more to attend Columbia.
The only drawbacks I see are the cost (which I am fortunate enough to be taken care of by my parents) and the weather.
More importantly, where will you be the happiest? For me its in New York City. Granted Columbia is in Washington Heights, but it is just a subway ride to Time Square, Manhattan, etc. So where do you see yourself fro the next 4 years?
Also, I am also confirming @BillyJoel on getting in state residency at Maryland. It is very hard to do achieve in-state.
@panmit where can I find the information you mentioned about the dean from maryland going to columbia ? or was it more word of mouth, I am literally looking at so many options.
@panmit and I meant more what you said about a new building being built and ready for next fall, could not find anything about that
