HELP! Currently on WL--considering reapplying

I am currently on the wait list at a school and am not sure what my chances at getting off the wait list are. I am considering reapplying this summer and working + enrolling in some post-bac classes and re-taking the MCAT. I plan on working full time if I don't get off the wait list and taking a couple of classes each semester.

My question is, how does the reapplication process work for people who are currently wait listed? If I reapply to other schools will I be eliminated from the wait list at the school that I am WLed at? How about if I reapply to the school that I am WLed at--I'm assuming that this will eliminate me for the 2011 entering class!

I'm just concerned because I would like to get my application out as early as possible this time around, but I will not know the ultimate outcome (I can't even gauge my chances...if I get pulled off the WL it probably wont be until early/mid-July...) of what will happen with this current cycle! Should I wait until August when I know for sure if I have been pulled of the wait list? That just seems late and applying late is a mistake that I've made already...

I really appreciate any help/advise that people have...especially if you've been in this situation! 🙂

No you won't be taken off the waitlist, but if you haven't started studying for the MCAT this year you'll probably wind up applying late and putting yourself at a disadvantage. Furthermore, if you are taknig postbac classes, bear in mind if you take them during your application year it will ahve little to no effect on your application. I would take a long hard look at the last year and see where you fell short and why you didn't get in. After that, see if what you've done over the last year has addressed the weaknesses in your application. If so, then reapply. If not, then you're not likely to see a different outcome next year. Just an FYI, many med schools will not take your post-bac GPA into consideration if you reapply this coming cycle. Also most med school will hold your application until the new MCAT score comes out.

As far as I know you will not be eliminated. The best way to know for sure is to call the school and ask.

You should really look into why you did not get in to medical school this cycle before rushing into the next cycle.

Is it because that you applied late in the cycle or is that your application is not as competitive as other people. If it is the latter, i would urge you to take some time off to better your application. One way to know is to call the school and ask why you were rejected.

As a reapplicant you will be asked to submit an additional essay or credential(s). This is to gauge how you have improved since your last application cycle. If you have not improved that much since last year, I would highly advise you from reapplying.

Also, I'm not sure how late you applied the first time around but if your application is complete by August it's still fairly early.

As a re-ap, I took a year off to better my apps.
I complete my apps mid august and didn't get my secondaries until Oct - Dec.
Interviewed in Dec - Feb.
First acceptance in mid Jan.

Just my 2 cents. Med school is not a race but a marathon. Make sure that your apps is awesome before applying so you can end up with a selection.
