Hey All, I am really looking for advice on choosing a program. If you were choosing between Northwestern, Emory, Vanderbilt, and Jefferson, are there any programs you would or would not choose? What have you heard (good or bad) about these programs. I want to do something surgical, most likely trauma surgery or orthopaedics. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Not quite sure about N'western and Jefferson, but I interviewed at Emory and Vandy this past fall and I thought both were great for different reasons. Vanderbilt seemed a bit more laid-back (which sort of reflects the city of Nashville, I suppose), while Emory seemed very faced-paced. This is not to say that Emory looked cut-throat, because I met some ridiculously friendly students there and I think it would offer a very supportive environment. Since you're into trauma, I'd have to recommend Emory--Grady Memorial Hospital is possibly the best trauma center in the country and I learned that the M3's & M4's really get to see/do a lot a this particular center.

I've been to visit Northwestern many times...gotta love Chicago and Evanston, and it's got a great rep. Good luck with your choices!

Vanderbilt
Northwestern
Emory
Jefferson
would be the order I would put them in, based on reputation alone. But go with your gut, where you felt the most comfortable and feel you will get the best education.

Did you miss the school intro while you were there or something? Did you not talk to current students?

Hi there,
Where you go to medical school has little to do with residency. How well you do at said medical school has loads to do with residency. Choose the school where you will be most comfortable and where you can do your best. The best students at a lower ranked medical school always go further than the worst students at a higher ranked school. If you do not have the grades/Board scores, your school is not going to get you into a good residency.

No, I was there for interviews and intros. However, to make an informed decision, I feel that it is important to get opinions and information from students and individuals who were not presented to me by the school because that information could potentially be jaded or biased.

And SDN information is never jaded or biased.

I'd go with Northwestern or Emory. I hear Vandy is A-F, even the first year. (That might not be true.) I wouldn't have been able to handle that too well. (I'm only now figuring out how to study.) And it seems like Jefferson just isn't in the same class. But hey, go where you think you'll be happy.

True, any information has the potential to be biased, that is why I want to average all I can get 🙂 Vandy is P/F as is NW, Emory however is graded. Thanks for the opinion (its not jaded or biased is it? 😉 )

No, I think the electives at Vandy are pass/fail, but required courses are graded...

Northwestern. Best combination of rep and location. Nice hospital and nice people. Brand new facilities. Progressive curiculum with only 2 hours of lecture time per day, Pass/Fail with plenty of time to study or get involved in research to pad your resume. Location is very urban and walkable with lots to do, yet still incredibly clean and safe. Very unique location in that sense. And it is the only school among the choices you mentioned where your friends and family will want to come visit YOU rather than you having to do the other way around. 😉
