Hi everyone,

I am really depressed because of the match. I made a terrible error in only ranking 3 spots (all competitive) in the match for psychiatry this year - royally screwed up. I had really specific interests in psychiatry - research in competency assessments and wanted to only go to very specific programs. Match day came and I found out that I didn't match into either of the three despite being told by PDs that i'd be competitive (I know I shouldn't have listened to them). My strategy was (at the time) that if I didn't match I would be able to scramble into a great psych program (as has been the experience of others from years past). Well, the scramble was dry, I almost got an offer from a program that would've been even more perfect for me than the other ones, but I ended up being second and the first guy accepted. The scramble was really was terrible, many programs used ERAS and I didn't get a call back.

A little about myself: US grad from decent school in california, low board scores but passed on first attempt, low class rank (just a bad test taker) but what I thought would shine was my grad degree from ivy, 2 papers in major journals, and a letter from the best known geri psychiatrist in the country!!! Unfortunately, though there was one black mark which was a suspension for one year from school d/t an act of academic dishonesty. I was told by many PDs, after being totally honest with them that this would count very little to their decision making. Had 12 interview invites, went on 9, ranked 3 🙁

Now I am in limbo without a place to go in July. My strategy is to contact all the PDs where I interviewed and send them my CV again and ask them to please keep me in mind should a vacancy be available during the course of the year.

My question to u all is what I should do and

1. what are my chances of something opening up in psych before July1 or after. I was told by a program coordinator at the school that I missed scrambling into that at least 1 spot opens up/year.

2. What should I do in the interim? Should I wait for psych (my calling) or should I try applying for a FP spot. Transitional years and prelim med are all gone. my whole application is psych.

3. What would you say to PDs in my email to them.

This is a great supportive board, I hope you all feel my pain. I screwed up by not playing the game. Any help and constuctive criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

This is a tough one.

My initial reactionary advice to people that didn't match into psych this year is to do the medicine prelim year, then slide into a PGY-II slot in psych the following year. In that sense, you've still taken a hit on having lost 6 months inpatient psych, but you would still be fine.

Are you sure that there are no prelim spots left?

Even though they said that the academic suspension didn't play into their decision making, it was probably all they needed to rank you lower, when there were other equally qualified candidates without that problem.

What about a surgical prelim? I'm not even sure if they are acceptable for psychiatry...they might be.

People get pregnant before july 1, people also die, have sick parents, go to jail, change their minds before july 1. I've seen this first hand from people in my school. There will be a pgy-I slot open in psych somewhere just prior to the start date. Even if you slid in a month or two late, they will be there. Somehow keep your ear to the ground, call lots of programs the week before the start, and see what's out there. In most cases, a residency would rather have someone start late or even someone they were not interested in, than have an unfilled spot....that makes for a miserable intern class who now must take more call, carry more patients, etc.

Good luck.

Try the "findaresident" service, it's run by AAMC and it pairs people up with open programs after match and scramble. You could also check the clearing house for psychiatry, just google that. Clearinghouses are available for all specialties and are places where programs post about open PGY-? positions.

I'm really sorry to hear about your situation, I didn't think I would match as an IMG this year and I was dreading the scramble. After I saw what scramble was like this year I thanked my lucky stars that I matched.

Great advice. Here's the link to FINDARESIDENT by AAMC.

thanks you guys...you've always been so helpful. yes i find myself in a tight situation and my past is what's made me into the person i am today. i've emphasized that in my interviews after being totally honest. certainly not everyone is perfect. but strangely enough, my imperfection has lit the fire in my belly for psychiatry. i think i just didn't play the game well this year...got too overconfident.

but sazi, thanks for your kind and helpful remarks. i am banking on the fact that there will be something that opens up in the next 14 weeks. i appreciate the support you all give on this forum. this is compassion at its best for someone who is a total stranger. if any of you hear, see, or can predict an open PGY-1 spot opening up this year please, please PM me. i was born for psychiatry i know it, i feel it.

best

Hey,

Anyone heard that if you complete a pgy-1 psychiatry year (then leave the program), you are eligible for a PGY-3 spot? It doesnt make any sense to me.

Also, MNMS, how did the call go? You never got back to me.

dude, what are you smoking?.... 😕

also, does anyone know of any listing of PGY-2 psych spots that are available right now (besides what is posted on the APA Clearinghouse Psychiatry website)? thanks.

i dont mean to be negative, but i dont personally know anybody who has found a residency position through that Find-A-Resident Position. i don't think residency programs really utilize this post-Match, for whatever reason.

Hi,
I didn't match either. It was hell, and totally unexpected. I had some rough spots in med school, so I guess it wasn't totally surprising but I think I did aim a little too high, and I felt the year was competitive. The pickings in the postmatch are not good. My recommendation is yes keep your antennas out there for PGY-1, but your best bet is to do a prelim or transitional year, work your ass off, and apply for a pgy-2 in psychiatry. You could possibly even apply again for pgy-1 spots, though I'm not sure. There are always second year spots that open up. Go to the APA clearinghouse, they always open up. If you're a motivated psych resident that's going into it for the right reasons, you have a good chance. Email me sometime, sometimes my program has openings. In retrospect, I might have liked to have done the prelim or transitional year (transitional might be less painful), and then tried for a good psych spot. Would have learned more medcine, and probably been happier in the long run. Don't worry, if you reallly want it, and are a US grad in good standing, you will get into a psych program. Just be a squeeky wheel and have a positive attitude.....You can contact me if you want more help....
