I shadowed one of the best doctors in each field. I shadowed top podiatrist who practiced more than 20 years, head of a Saint Vicent hopspital Spinal neuro surgery, NYU orthopaedic surgeon, two PM&R interventional doctors and my experience with doctors aren't that great. First of all, it is all about money. i always thought that doctors are there to help people and the money they are getting is a little compensation for the doctors to make a living and prolong a good servicemanship for the future patients. But all of them are so greedy and soaked into capitalism that they lost the whole idea of volunteering and helping patients who are in pain. They actually decide, move and act upon how much the insurance is paying them.
Second, they all think that they are the smartest person in the world. You should never go against a doctor or make an arguement of the treatment plans. Sometimes the arrogance of doctors reaches to a point where they think the earth will fail to rotate without their presence.
Third, their life style. I think if they call themselves doctors, they have to do research, go to conferences, have a meeting with different doctors in the different field, or learn knew techniques to better their services. However, they are interested in the new Ferrari F430 Scuderia that just hit the new market and compares it to the Bentley that he currently drives as a daily driving. Most of the time, they complain that they are not seeing enough patients to make a living and whines about the malpractice insurance fees and etc.
That is some negative aspects of the doctors that I've seen. There are also many good things that they have shown me but I would have never thought that money will play a huge factor when it gets to practice. I think treating patients and helping them comes first then money. what is your opinion on this?

what is your opinion on this?

That you watch too much TV. From reading your mega, clusterf*ck of paragraph I've gathered: Podiatrists are medical doctors, Doctors drive Bentleys and Ferraris, they are expected to 'volunteer,' that doctors only think they are smart - because the process of getting there is one big cake walk-, that you aren't a physician if you only practice in a clinical setting - research is required, and that doctors shouldn't worry about rapidly declining compensation???? My opinion (for the little it is worth) is that you have a warped view of what medicine should be.

1. you're in NYC - not exactly shocking that the almight buck is such a big deal

2. you've observed what...five people? Are you really that naive and frankly, foolish enough to think that they represent a field in which literally thousands of people work? That would be like me working with five corrupt police officers and then assuming that all police officers are working with their hands out for bribes.

3. sadly, the days where people worked to heal human suffering, bring peace to the world, and save dolphins in their spare time, all for free, has gone the day of the dodo bird. Yes, you really do have to make a living these days, and yes, it is very expensive to be a doctor...particularly in private practice (malpractice insurance, licensure, continuing education, nurses, equipment)...so you should realize that physicians have to be businessmen as well (albeit with a conscience hopefully) who can be generous with their time and skill but obviously need to support themselves and their families. In other words, it's time to grow up Peter Pan.

Umm, talk about arrogance. You're a pre-med student and you think that THEY are arrogant because they didn't listen to YOUR suggested treatment plan?

"Saint Vicent hopspital Spinal neuro surgery, NYU orthopaedic surgeon, two PM&R interventional doctors"

a neurosurg doing spine, an ortho, and pmnr interventional are some of the highest paying specialties in medicine. actually spine IS the highest paying specialty in medicine, I believe, and the rest aren't far behind. you got a slightly skewed example. check out some family docs.

Not all Doctors behave that way.
It should stimulate you to go for it, and stand out as a different doctor.
There are a lot of "good" Doctors out there

There comes a point where the student loans start to dry up, the bank of mommy and daddy closes, you have a family to support, and all of the idealistic garbage in the world won't pay your mortgage. I assume that you're still in college, which means that:

a)a lot of people with tenure who don't work that hard are teaching you that those of us that work hard should not worry about being reimbursed

b)you have probably never had to earn a living for yourself

c)you really have no idea what it takes to become a physician

d)everyone around you is largely being supported by someone else, which makes it really easy to dissociate your work from money

As they say in business: no margin, no mission. You can't do anything without keeping the doors open. It's easy to become bitter when you're struggling to pay your bills. High achievers generally follow money to a degree, and I like the idea of having the guy operating on my spine being a high achiever.

This is the only field in which we are expected to accept progressively declining reimbursement for less work for the sole privelege of working. Oh yeah, when you get sued, they want real money. Good intentions won't satisfy the lawyers.

Yup.. I think you need to shadow some tree-hugging rural medicine family doctor... I think you will find that more to your liking...

I agree. All docs are arrogant, know everything, roll in da bentley, have more money that God, and are consumed by the almighty dollar.

Maybe you can go to med school, complete a residency, and spearhead the effort to fix us and make us nice.

I'll tell you what, in a few years I'll fly my private jet out to Arizona and take you out to dinner.

Sometimes it's fun to see how the other half lives.

😀

I'll pick you up at the Scottsdale Airpark in my Bentley (since your wife probably wouldn't fit into the Ferrari) and we can laugh all night about the poor sick bastards who are paying for our drinks at The Mondrian. "Whaw whaw my back hurts, whaw I've got cancer".

😉
