Help from parents?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm wondering how many pre pharm students are expecting help from their parents while in pharm school. Are most people just relying on loans?
If "parents" is a codeword for FAFSA, then yes, we're all expecting help from "parents"😀

Cash savings and loans... then again it's been 11 years since I've been provided for by my parents in any way (Besides using their house starting in Fall for pharmacy school!)

Yea, I guess its unreasonable to expect parents to help for all these years of college. Mine helped out for undergrad, but I guess I should expect to use my loans to cover all living expenses from now on.

Nope, but I'm a little bit older than the average pharmacy student. I have a house and will be married just before school starts in the Fall. But as some others have said it's been a couple years since my parents have provided for me financially anyways. However, if they decide they want to help I certainly won't turn it down. 😛

By all means take advantage of them for food and such if they're offering to help, don't feel pressured to take more loans if they're offering.

However, if you're expecting it more than they're offering or insisting in helping then I think you should give 'em a break.

All in all, a lot of it depends on your personal relationship with them and everything so it's hard for us to really comment objectively. 🙂

My parents were gracious enough to pay for undergrad for me. I've been on my own financially since I graduated in 07. I will most definitely rely fully on savings and loans. I don't want to burden them, I feel I'm at the point in my life that the kids need to take care of the parents now.

Yea I kinda figured that after undergrad its time for me(or some bank/loan) to provide for myself. Maybe I will just ask for a graduation present like a new laptop or a cruise 😀

My parents pay for my car, insurance, and cell phone so I am going to try and work part time and help pay most of my bills.

They've always sent me Publix grocery cards and extra money if I need it, but I feel bad taking a large sum every month (like paying my rent, etc).

I'll be 23 in May, even though I'm an only child I don't want to be a burden even though they insist that they enjoy helping me. If they were really wealthy or something maybe I wouldn't care, but they still work so I feel like it's partly my fault they won't retire. lol

Well, If your parents are millionaires! I don't see why you shouldn't ask for their help. If not then I think its time to start taking some loans and with this you will be able to have some money or a lot of money left over for yourself. In the end you will be able to pay your loans off in a reasonable amount of time!

I hate taking money from my parents- even though they sometimes offer to help. I've been on my own since 17 and although they helped me with my car and insurance through undegrad, I always felt bad about it. I hope that when I am making money as a pharmacist, I can begin to give back all that they have given me. They worked so hard and went from being dirt poor and wearing hand-me-downs and eating rice and beans everyday to being financially secure and well off. The least I can do is help them to retire early. When I get my first paycheck from being a pharmacist, they will be the first people I think of. So no, I will not expect their help for pharm school. Loans, savings, and tuition reimbursement will be my options.

I do not expect to recieve help for Pharmacy School, then again I am married with children. I didn't go to college after high school because I never had the offer of help for school then. Expecting it now would be silly for me.

I would love to say that I won't accept any money, but that just isn't a reality for me. I moved out for college the same month I turned 18 and have been in school ever since. My parents didn't really "allow" me to work in high school, and all my money in undergrad went towards rent and bills because Miami is so expensive... so I have relatively no savings except for what I make this summer working full time. They care more about me finishing school and working for what I can pay for at the moment than taking a break to save money working full time... I guess they figure the sooner I finish the sooner I can help them. haha

My mother is a CRNA and has this huge house with just her and my sister. She offered to pay for all of me, my husband, and my son's expenses while I am in pharmacy school and my husband is going to college for pre-dentistry. It is going to be a big adjustment because both of us just separated from the military and will not have our own house anymore and we will have to move to a different state I love the fact that my mom is letting us have this opportunity. With a 3 year old, I need all of the family support that I can get. I am very lucky to have a great mom!

You didn't have a choice; they brought you into this world. It's their responsibility to help you!

I am 24 years old with my own family. Even though my mother brought me into this world, it is not her responsibility to pay for my expenses while in pharmacy school. She has offered to help out because she has been through the same thing and understands. So yeah, I do have a choice and I choose to make it easier for me, my husband, and my child. My mom benefits from it too as I will help her out in any way that I can.
