I am looking for a D.O to shadow, with how crazy the MCAT is, I think I will have to settle for an osteopathic school (Which I prefer from my way of thinking). My problem is to find a D.O I can shadow before the application cycle open. Please does anyone know of how to find a D.O that is willing to allow a student to shadow then for about 1-2 month, in the dallas, TX community. My ethnicity is african-American.

And if you convey that attitude with an admissions committee they'll probably just settle with rejecting you.

Why does it have to be like that. I don't really care if it is DO or MD, at the end of the day it is kind of physician u want to be that matters DO or MD. U probably miss understood what I mean by settle, I mean it in way to portray that, I like both very much, (EVEN if DO is my favorite, MD is also equal good) and with my grades my best fit will be DO. Also Like I said b4 it doesn't matter DO or MD, both are great physician title.

Not buying the "DO is my favorite." If you think you're settling and are cool with that, go ahead. You don't need our approval to do whatever it is you want to do with your life.

One got back to me the same night and the other took about a month to get back to me.

How many did you email? I emailed about 15 and only one replied. Unfortunately, he's retiring so I can't even shadow him..🙁

I emailed A LOT! Maybe 40 or 50. Most were only looking for current medical students to mentor but my persistence paid off. It required me to start looking outside of my area and I eventually spent a week shadowing in Lake Havasu and another week in Las Vegas. Recently, I found a D.O. in LA that practices OMM and I'll be shadowing her on my vacation next week. Keep at it and don't get discouraged.

Graduate2be,
What's the difference between sending an email
to a doctor and requesting a mentor via iLearn?

Thanks for the encouragement!! Best of luck to you in your future endeavors! 😀

There is no difference. The messages that you send to the physicians on iMentor go to their email inboxes. You could try looking up the physicians email addy yourself and email them directly but in that case, your email may go to their junk mail folder.

This is how I found my two D.O.'s to shadow....

Oh good lord!!! You have answered my prayers!!!! I knew there was a faster way!

However, I looked up 7 random D.Os in my area today. On the second call, I was able to get in contact with a office manager for an OB/GYN office that would review my resume to see if I could shadow a doctor at the office! Whew..... *praying* I hope they let me 😕
