This is my first post ever on SDN! I am applying this year to AMCAS (MD only) and I need help making a list. For personal reasons I applying this cycle only and not to DO schools. I'm aware my stats are low, but I'm planning on just shooting my shot, considering my strong ECs.

  1. What kind of MD schools should I be targeting based on my stats and experiences? I need to make a list
  2. Do I have a realistic shot at UMiami? It’s my dream school, and I know they’re holistic, but I’m aware my stats are on the lower side.
  3. What MD schools might value my background the most?

MCAT: 505 (highest attempt)
cGPA: 3.66
sGPA: 3.37
Currently completing a Master’s in Medical Sciences at my in-state medical school (strong institutional affiliation). Grades will not be available until later this year, so unsure how much weight this will carry at other schools, but still worth mentioning.

Background:
SC Resident (already applying to in state schools)
  • Strong personal statement focused on patient and minority advocacy
  • First-generation college student from an immigrant family
  • Grew up translating between 5 languages
  • ORM but labeled EO1 disadvantaged on amcas
I have 7 strong Letters of Reccomendations.

Research (~500 hours):

  • 1 full publication
  • 1 brief article publication
  • 2 poster presentations
  • 2 acknowledgments in additional publications
EC:
  • Clinical: 2,051 hours
  • Volunteering: 278 hours (underserved communites)
  • Shadowing: 127 hours (ongoing)
  • Leadership: 595 hours (college and state president of multiple prehealth organizations)
  • Hobbies also listed well

You should not apply until you have completed your Master's program and receive the benefit of a strong letter from your faculty. Many schools will just sit on considering you for an interview until they see you do well after your full year (AACOMAS does allow academic updates).

The only MD schools I'd consider are in-state options. You are good for DO options, including VCOM-Spartanburg and Campbell.

I suggest these MD schools with your stats:
Your South Carolina state public schools
NOVA MD
Methodist (when it opens)
Belmont
Alice Walton
Roseman
TCU
Rosalind Franklin
Medical College Wisconsin
Oakland Beaumont
Wayne State
Drexel
Eastern Virginia
Temple
Albany
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Ponce (St. Louis)
