Hey ladies and gentleman of SDN military section. To start Off, I am for sure doing the military route. Not because of money, but because America has given me everything I could ever has for and I want to repay America by helping our men and women. I made up my mind already about making a career out of the military. So just some basic questions, is there a cut off for the hpsp scholarship atm? Also, I would want to do a military residency instead of civilian. Which is more competitive? I would love to do general surgery or neurology. Are they competitive in the military? I also would not mind doing some tours in Iraq or Afghanistan to make myself more competitive for a residency in the military.

Also the branch of my choice would be navy. I have family in the navy and they couldn't be happier.

Thank you for taking your time to read this post.

Not sure where you are in the whole med school process. A few more specifics would help guide the discussion.

I have 1 more year of prereqs left. I have 3.3 gpa atm and If I continue getting str8 a's I can maybe get a 3.4. I will only be applying to DO schools. My practice mcat seems to be at 31-34

I'm just trying to find out as much info possible on how the whole process goes when if I get the scholarship.

Make sure you peruse the site. It will give you a large number of nitty gritty details to answer some of the very specific questions.

The military does offer both general surgery and neurology for residency. Neurology is a small program and there is a tendency these days to defer one or two. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have generated a large number of TBIs and has enhanced the need for Neuro.

Once you are ready to apply for school, you need to link with a Medical Programs Recruiter. He or she will assist you with the application. You will need to provide transcripts, letters of recommendation and complete a commissioning physical. Should your grades remain the same and you perform reasonably well on the MCATs, you will be at the lower end of the accepted applicant pool, but it is a reasonable shot.

HPSP pays tuition/fees/books/supplies and gives you about 25K to live on. It is better for the DO schools who tend to have high tuitition. The time in HPSP does not count towards retirement or time commitments. Payback is year for year.

HSCP pays you as an active duty E-6 with full pay/allowances and benefits. It pays nothing for school directly. The advantage is that you are active duty and it counts towards pay longevity and retirement.

For post med school, I refer you to the site. Those details are described at length.
