Hey there.
I am actually a junior in high school and i am seriously planning ahead and i just wanted to know a few things.
  • what should i major in if i want to become an anesthesiologist - in college? i was thinking about biology, but i wanted a professionals input
  • is it an interesting job, and is it worth the hours?
and really just anything about what an anesthesiologist does would be helpful. i have been researching it for about a week now, and i dont feel like i know much about what they actually do. 🙂

First off, your major in college should not be chosen based on what field of medicine you think you are going into-- if you want to be a doctor, you need to take the typical premedical curriculum (see your premed advisor) and courses in other disciplines and decide what you want to major in. You don't have to major in a science to go to medical school, most people do because you end up having enough credits after the premed curriculum to major in bio or chem so it's pretty easy to put together. I was a French major-- but had all the premed requirements when I applied. If you enjoy anthropology, math, etc. etc., medicine shouldn't stop you from majoring in one of those.

With regards to what anesthesiologists do, what it entails, there are millions of threads on this forum with regards to that. Please start here:

Bottom line, doesn't matter what you major in at college, just need to do really well in the pre-med courses. Dont' worry about gearing anything toward anesthesiology right now-- chances are you'll end up doing something completely different once you actually go to med school.

good luck.

go to the pre-med forums and use the SEARCH function.

I have all sorts of majors in my med school class, yes, including a French Lit major.

You seem driven...that's awesome. Good luck. Let's hope "Medicine" is still a good field to go into when you would matriculate into medical school!!

haha thanks you guys. i appreciate it. 🙂

no its not that interesting of a job. The risks exceeds the benefits if yo uknow what i mean.. get a job selling cars or something. Now thats a job

Good to see there are other folks who were french majors too. Doubled in history, french, and the post-bacc with BS in general science. It truly doesn't matter what you major in college, as long as you do well in your classes (like GPA of 3.7 +)
