I am doing this summer program and I am wondering which program sites I should apply to. I can pick up to three.

I want a program site that will offer me a foundation in biology and gen chem. I am also looking for a program that offers clinical research.

The ones I have in mind

Case Western Reserve University Schools of Medicine & Dental Medicine Cleveland, OH

Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and College of Dental Medicine
New York, NY

Duke University School of Medicine
Durham, NC

University of Washington Schools of Medicine and Dentistry
Seattle, WA ( my favorite)

-Here is the site with all the information, thanks guys!

Univ of Wa because it is your favorite, DUH

Depends if you want to attend medical school there later. University of Washington only accepts applicants from a specific set of states. If you're not in one of those states, you will not be able to attend that medical school regardless of qualifications. So take that into account.

I do not think I want to attend these medical schools later, (who know if I will even get to that point). But what I am really wondering is which one do you think will offer the most benefits for a freshmen in college? Which one would you choose?

I would go with Duke.

I wasn't a fan of Case (interviewed there), don't want to be a part of a drive-by at Columbia, and agree with RPedigo about UW.

Too bad Duke is in "dirty" Durham. That town is sketch, I am alwasy scared for my life driving through there.

"drive-by".. is Columbia located in a bad part of town?

I did the same summer program in 2004. I went to Columbia and had a blast. Academics-wise, the lecturers are great, you get to meet with one of the deans, who also gives a couple of lectures, and you get to spend some time in the anatomy lab and doing histology. You get treated like a medical student and learn a TON.

The dorm is relatively nice, and there are several of great restaurants within walking-distance. It is not in the best part of town, but it is safe during the day, and at night you just go out with a couple of other people and you are fine.

The best part, however, was being in NYC for 6 weeks. We spent the whole day in class/studying, then spent the night out on the town. There was rarely a night we stayed in, and when we did, we had parties up on the 11th floor balcony of the dorm, which overlooks downtown.

Wow, I would give ANYTHING to go back to that summer. Choose Columbia.
If you want to PM me and talk about it, I would love to reminisce....

I would read booswim542's post for a more personal answer.

My answer is based on my Orgo Prof's experience - she told me how when she interviewed there for grad school they were walking out of one of the buildings when a drive-by happened. The tour guide had them duck down behind something and told them to sit tight. She decided not to go to Columbia.

WHAT!?... Um, I might have to cross that school off my list.

Cool, I just PMed you.

I did the same program, SMDEP at Duke in the summer of 2006. It was an awesome experience, I highly recommend this site. I got into Columbia as well, but I choose Duke because I knew I wanted to apply there in the future. They assign you to diff academic tracks based on the current classes you've completed, and of course there is clinical exp. at Duke Med! You should have no problem with Durham, as you will see transportation is a major issue, so ur on campus the majority of the time. Unless u pay for a taxi, or bum a ride off someone who drove to the program.

I was wondering if you could get accepeted in more than one program, I got the answer now. Any advice on the application process?

Oh - and by the way - the medical school campus is at a different location than the undergrad/grad school campus where the drive-by probably happened. But honestly - a shooting just happened at a mall in Omaha, it can obviously happen anywhere....

Well as far as the app process goes get solid recommendations, and make sure in your essays you make strong personal appeal. State your passion to the pursuit of a career in medicine, make sure that comes across clearly. And also how you plan to contribute to increasing diversity in medicine, as that is the hallmark of this program.

oh btw..none of the program sites offer clinical research as far as I know

just from looking at the program website.. id choose KY

I Pm'd you.

I'm thinking of DUke, Yale, and Columbia. But I can't decide if I should take Duke off and put in UW as a 'just in case' school.

Why is UW your favorite? Besides their cool website.😎

Hey guys, I am applying to these programs as well this year so any help and info is appreciated. Feel free to PM me other guys who are applying.

I am worried about being denied from these programs because of my race. I am financially disadvantaged, want to work with medically under-served (rural or urban) communities. However I am not an underrepresented minority in healthcare. Do I have anything to worry about?

PS. OP, your thread title is really misleading. You might have more success with the thread if you mentioned this was about a summer program.

oh man its in an awful part of town. I got a volunteer position there during my first year of postbac. I showed up the first day and quit on the spot. Its really really scary.
