Hi all. I think my situation is unique here on SDN; I am from India. I am a BSc student in Zoology. I intend to become a military officer after my degree is complete (very soon.) However, I'd also like to add that if I cannot join the military due to possible medical unfitness (nothing major, the policy stuff) I would like to become a biomedical scientist. Actually I did intend to do MBBS, but due to laughable reasons, such as I was -- and I am -- dependent on my parents financially and my parents do not get with each other well, and other such extremely social, personal but seemingly trivial reasons I could not get into medical college. Now I have no intents of becoming a medical doctor, but rather I am trying to think about doing research in Zoology with medical emphasis if plan A of joining the military does not work due to various government policies.
So basically I am saying is that my condition is nerve-wrecking, I am not from the USA, and if I do my Master's in Zoology and later a PhD in the same (in any field), would it be possible for me to become a medical scientist? Unfortunately I do not see my degree in Zoology as valuable as a degree in Chemistry (central science), but due to my personal problems my score (report-card) took blows and I ended up getting close, but not where I wanted it to be. As for my current syllabus for Zoology, we study human biology a lot but I am still skeptical that my potential career in Zoology will lead to medicine-centered outcomes. I could be wrong and just neurotic, though.
What do you think? If you're worried about my mental health, I've been checked by two psychiatrists, they say I am just fine and healthy. But yes, the family stuff (and my lack of experience/knowledge in the world of research) has led me to be sort of panic mode when I recall such experiences -- and live with them at the time of writing. It's not that I just want to do research, research and research. I'd be happy with an MBA but I want good, not just decent job prospects too. With an MBA (administrative position), will I get them generally in your opinion? It's OK if you give US BLS Data. Or are there any other careers (aside from the military and civil services) where I can make an impact on people's lives that do not include research? Please answer as per your expertise and knowledge, thank you, life in India is much different than that of US/UK but any help is appreciated.
