Hi all. I am super lucky to have received four interviews from Texas schools this cycle (no prematches) and was wondering if I could get some advice on how to rank them. Right now, I have them as:
1. McGovern
2. TA&M
3. UTMB
4. TCOM

I am fairly set on having McGovern as #1 but I am not sure about how to rank A&M and UTMB.

A&M
Pros
  • Good name and prestige
  • Has a bunch of interesting programs that I may be interested in
  • Believe each campus has its own core rotations, which is super nice
  • Good vibe from students
  • Solid research on all campuses (though heard it is harder on the satellites)
  • P/F

Cons
  • If I were to stay in BCS, I am not too fond of how third-year rotations are structured (all shelf exams taken in march)
  • Might have to move a year in, which can be inconvenient
  • Not sure how the 1.5 year preclinical would be

UTMB
Pros
  • P/F
  • The students seemed pretty cool and comfortable
  • Galveston is a great medical location
  • More defined and easier to get research opportunities
  • Big class size
  • Good board scores

Cons
  • Galveston is kind of meh city + potentially bad weather
  • Perhaps less prestige overall?

For a bit of background, I am leaning towards doing neurology and plan on staying in Texas for residency. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

I know today's the deadline but A&M and UTMB are both great schools I think UTMB might have the edge on research since they don't have to deal with multiple campuses, but it might be down to where you want to live. A&M gives you quite a bit of choice.

If you have a strong connection to one of the campuses (family, support network, connections, spouse) you'll have a pretty good chance of getting that campus. You'll write a blurb about why you want a campus and a committee will decide.

Thanks for the input! I ended up ranking UTMB higher for the research like you mentioned, plus I don't have to move as much.
