The EC arms-race continues. We all need several hundred hours of whatever and students are prioritizing quality of life during undergrad over beating out those hundreds of hours during undergrad. Honestly, I see this trend as a positive from the perspective of the health of the student.well over half (63.4%) of new matriculants reported that more than a year had passed since graduating from college (up from 60.6% in 2016 and 62.6% in 2017)

I don’t know about you, but I did my time off and gunning after high school and before undergrad. I am just coasting now...Or they overwork themselves in undergrad AND during their gap years to gain maximum utility of their time and be the #gunner of the app cycle...
While I agree this is a trend, I think it is due to the rising number of non-trads not by choice of the trade.Another trend I noticed is to gain some other industry experience such as biomedical or computational experiences with hope to engage in dual careers.
Mostly true but some by choice. Out of 3 I know, 2 differed admissions (right after graduation) to get industry experience and 3rd as you said took gap year to strengthen ECs and MCAT due to tough UG school. While I agree this is a trend, I think it is due to the rising number of non-trads not by choice of the trade.
