Hello SDNers,

I just wanted some insight on which schools I should add and take out! My goal is to stay preferably in California. The criteria I chose my schools were based on tuition and location! Thank you for your help!

. Work Experience: 1500+ hours (tutor + hospital jobs)

Dental School List
. UC Los Angeles
. UC San Francisco
. University of Southern California
. University of the Pacific
. Western University of Health Sciences

. University of Michigan
. University of Texas, San Antonio
. Texas A&M University
. University of Texas, Houston

Since you are a CA resident, it is very easy to cut the following from your list: UT, San Antonio and Houston, Texas A&M, University of Washington. These schools accept a very small percentage of out of state students, so small that it would not be worth applying especially since your goal is to stay in CA anyways.

This would cut your list down to 11. I think with your stats you should feel pretty confident applying to 11 schools.

If you're looking to cut down further than @knewstance said, I'd also cut off Boston and NYU unless you have a huge affinity towards them. Both are super expensive compared to what you could have in CA, and I've heard things about BU having problems with getting patients since there are so many amazing dental schools in Boston for patients to go to. You're blessed to have instate at CA with your stats

Texas has a law that they can only accept a maximum of 10% of their class. Usually they accept 5-6 oos

Texas schools have an accept very few OOS applicants - odds are small. USC & NYU are among the most expensive schools - keep that in mind. I'd add Penn and a few schools that give in-state tuition after 1st year (UNLV, Maryland, Rutgers).

I really appreciate all your responses! I always knew Texas schools were a reach and I will most likely be removing Boston and NYU. I have been looking at other schools that allow instate after a year, but there’s just so few! So thank you again for mentioning a few!

I grew up in CA, went to undergrad in CA, and though I was frustrated that I applied late and didn't get into a CA dental school, it was one of the best things for me (I ended up going to Pitt). It was a great experience to see another part of the country, so something to consider!

If I can suggest a school from my experience as a Residency Director and as someone who has dental students rotate through my clinic on externships - I'd check out ASDOH in AZ, the 4th years that I see from there are incredibly skillful and competent since they do 4-6 months of externship - it's basically like doing a residency. It's also a fairly close flight to anywhere in CA - 45 minutes to LA. The main negative of that school is the cost... but if you're already considering USC... 😉
