I am little confused with this question. Are they asking for experience that has shaped me or given me insight into characteristic such as compassion, teamwork, leadership etc? I would appricaite if someone could help me to clarify. Thankyou.

Judging from the fact that it says your character, I'm going to have to go with shaped you and not character in general.

I think you should focus on specifics. One of the character traits that I developed as a March for Babies fundraiser was public speaking skills. I had to give presentations in front of ~300 volunteers. I think public speaking is an important part of leadership, and is a very specific character trait that can be tested at interviews.

I agree. It'll be a tighter essay if you pick one good thing about yourself that you want to highlight. I feel like the ho-hum essay is going to say, 'X taught me compassion, humility, leadership, teamwork, etc', without really showing how any of those rather general traits was developed. Go with a nice trait that they might not see elsewhere in the application that was directly influenced by the EC and you'll be golden.
