I have a list of 19 schools right now that I am trying to get narrowed down to under 15. I think that's a good number? I don't know, that still sounds like a lot though. Anyway, here's what I'm working with in a nutshell:
Undergrad
And these are the schools on my list right now, which I chose based on proximity, median matriculant GPA and MCAT scores, and percentage of out of state students per class (for non-FL schools). The only reason the two LSU schools are on the list is because my dad is an LSU Shreveport alum, so I have some legacy pull there and maybe LSU New Orleans as well.
University of Florida - TOP OVERALL
Miami
Univ. of South Florida
Florida Atlantic
Univ. of Central Florida
Florida International
Florida State
Emory - TOP OUT OF STATE
Medical Univ. of South Carolina (Charleston)
Wake Forest
Univ. of Alabama Birmingham
Virginia Commonwealth
LSU New Orleans
Univ. South Carolina
Univ. South Carolina at Greenville
Tulane
Louisville
Univ. Arkansas
LSU Shreveport
Any advice you may have is welcomed. I'm having a tough time choosing. Trying to get a move on here so I can get the primaries submitted this week. Thanks!
Undergrad
- 3.7 GPA Overall
- 3.4 Science
- Bachelors in Health Science from University of Florida
- 2013: 29 Composite, PR 12, VR 8, BS 9
- Just took it again yesterday (7/12). I did not do nearly as well as I should have. I was very prepared information-wise, I just did not work quickly enough on test day and ended up having to rush through some sections. Predicting 28-31
- 9 months working in a research lab ~20 hours per week
- Medical mission trip to Bolivia for a week this summer. Lots of time spent assisting in the OR
- ~100 hours volunteering at a free clinic this summer
- Will be working in another lab this coming fall and spring >20 hours per week
- Shadowing: ~70 hours with various physicians, plus ~20 hours with surgeon in Bolivia
- Very active in my fraternity, held leadership positions
- Inducted into Greek honor society
- Ocean rescue lifeguard since 2009. Trained as a first responder, have dealt with a variety of medical emergencies
- Great letter from program director of my former lab (he teaches for UF COM and I think may actually be on the admissions board)
- Good letter from physician I shadowed
- Decent letters from two Biology professors
