hi

it says in the materials emory sent that there is a shuttle bus involved in the day. can anyone tell me what kind of shuttle bus is involved (i.e. public bus? campus shuttle? med school's van? etc?). bonus points from me if you can remember whether it had a wheelchair lift! also, did the bus take you a short or long distance (i.e. was it walkable, even if it was a long walk?) and was it a deal where you made your own way from emory to grady on the bus, or was the bus ride itself part of the tour?

i am a wheelchair user preparing for my interview. any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Beep,

The shuttle bus is part of the interview day. You will be taken in a mid-size shuttle to downtown or midtown Atlanta which is at least 6-7 minutes away from the Emory campus.

I am not sure about the accessibility for the wheelchairs but I would guess the shuttles would have it. But to make sure either e-mail or call the admissions office and request it from them. The admissions office personnel at Emory are very nice.

I've found the admissions staff nice, too, but I don't want to ask them about this directly if I don't have to. I would much prefer my first interactions with them to be mostly about my personality and qualifications, rather than about my disability and what "special" accommodations I will need.

So... is a mid-sized shuttle one of those small-ish buses that seats about 25 and that has steps up the front? Was it the regular university-to-hospital shuttle or a special bus for interviewees? Was the shuttle ride part of the tour? Is a 6 or 7 minute ride a walkable distance?

I am not a med interviewee, but I recently was at emory for residency interview. IF the shuttle is from emory to grady, it is definitely NOT walkable, or even power wheelchairable. Hope you find your answers.

I honestly wouldn't worry about the admissions office judging you by what accomodations you need and just go ahead and call them. The whole staff is unbelievably nice and I don't think they will scoff or mark your file if you tell them you use a wheelchair. To look at the flip side of this issue, I think it would be better for them to know and for there to be some kind of arrangement in place so that the day goes more smoothly for you--and you can focus on forming your impression of Emory--rather than winging it and constantly worrying about how to handle each phase of the day, which might overshadow anything you like about the school.

Whatever you decide, good luck!!! 🙂

Yes, the one that took us to Grady did seat up to 25 people, a small-ish bus indeed. And I do not believe that the 6-7 min ride is walkable. Also, the shuttle ride is part of the tour. They take you to the Grady Hospital as this will be the prospective hosptial for your rotations.

Its part of the tour but its not like they were showing a lot of stuff from the bus.. the windows had some ad on them lol. I dont recall our specific bus having a lift, but im sure they have one with a lift somewhere, the shuttle is free for anyone going to the hospital, patients included..

Our bus actually got in a wreck on the way to the tour lol..

Thanks for the info...

So it's the regular university shuttle bus on its regular rounds, not a special one for the interviewees?
