Bifid uvula occurs because of failure of fusion of palatine shelves.Lateral cleft lip occurs due to failure of fusion of medial nasal process and maxillary process.

Adult palate comprises of primary and secondary palate.Primary palate consists of pre-maxillary part of maxilla and forms the adult palate anterior to the incisive foramen.Secondary palate develops from palatine shelves and forms the adult palate posterior to the incisive foramen.Cleft palate occurs due to failure of fusion of palatine shelves, nasal septum and primary palate.
