I am graduating the december 2012 with a biology major with a 2.4 GPA from SUNY Binghamton. I have research experience for one semester. I've done volunteering jobs at hospitals and have been a office secretary at a pediatricians office. I am starting to show interest in medicine but I know that I cannot get anywhere with a GPA like that. I have not taken my DATs and I'm very confused about my future. help please?

It will be extremely difficult to gain acceptance to a dental school with a 2.4 GPA no matter what your DAT score is.

Are you interested in medicine as a medical doctor or are you interested in dental medicine as a dentist? I will be straight forward and let you know that a 2.4 GPA will not get you into dental school. Dental schools have GPA cut-offs, and I don't think your 2.4 GPA is above that. Also, it is important that you raise your GPA. I suggest that you take time to do a Masters or a post-bacc program. This is very common, and dental schools like that you take that option with your low GPA. Re-take your classes as well. Also, a semester of research isn't that much, but I stress quantity over quality. If you dedicated a lot of hours, participated in research symposiums, or anything extra with the one semester of research, then it'll look good. Lastly, it is highly recommended that you shadow a dentist or a dental specialist. Dental schools find it very important that you have an understanding of dentistry. The best way for that is to get some shadowing done. I hope this helps!

I'm going to give it to you straight... You will need at least a 3.0 if you have any hope of getting into dental school and even then, that is on the lowest of spectrums.

Realistically, fixing this GPA will take at least 3 years. You will need 1-2 years of informal postbac of upper division sciences, then another 1-2 of a masters program of some type. You will also need to get a perfect 4.0 for all three years to get your GPA above a 3.0.

To be honest, this is super difficult to do and it may not be in your best interest with all the time and money that this will require. You might consider nursing, chiropractic, podiatry, or even Caribbean MD, but even then you still might need to fix your GPA for a year or two.

Best of luck!

I was in the same boat, took me one year, 3 semesters, 36 credits with a 3.9 gpa, 6 science/3 math courses to get my gpa to almost a 3.0 and my sgpa to just over 2.8...like the other people said, this is the minimum to not get your app simply thrown in the trash when it gets to the schools and even then its a long shot so choose if this is a battle you wanna fight.

OP: If you do choose another route and you determine you wish to do medicine do NOT do a Foreign MD program. Choose to go to DO (doctor of osteopathic medicine) school. They calculate your GPA by replacing retake grades with your old grades. So if you retake a class you got an F in and get an A you will have a 4.0 GPA for that class. Not averaged.

Your chances of practicing in the US as a DO are much better than doing a foreign MD program. If you have a lot of really low grades dragging your GPA down you might want to retake the F's. You will be able to raise your GPA MUCH faster.

Though, make sure medicine is something you want to do.

Are you considering dentistry because you think it might be easier to get in then medical school? You said, "I am starting to show interest in medicine."
