Hi people,

First of all, I am so grateful that I found this forum, it has answered many of my questions. You guys are awesome. This is my first post and my question is the following: My GPA is acceptable I guess but if I wanted to improve it, do you guys think that getting a degree in dental hygiene after I am finished with my bachelors would be a good idea if I wanted to apply to Dental school? Is a masters better? Thanks so much guys!

Getting into Dental Hygiene is not easy!! neither getting into a master! if you want to be a dentist just finish all pre-rep and take DAT.. Don't waste your $$$ or time. When you talk about your GPA acceptable? Be more specific. If is below 3.0 then take some extra classes towards a master or post bachelor to increase GPA.

If you had looked at the requirements for a DH program and that for an MS would you still be asking this question?

It may not be easy, but if one cannot get accepted into DH program with a BS/BA then there isn't much hope of getting into DS.

Thanks again for the replies. I have a 3.4 overall GPA and about a 3.1 science GPA. I haven't taken the DAT yet, I plan in taking it next summer and I am trying to do well on my courses so I can raise the GPA. Nevertheless I am realistic, I am going to finish with a Biology degree that I can do nothing with so if I don't get accepted the first time around, I will do dental hygiene and reapply. I guess all the classes that I take during the DH program (If I have to do it) will count towards my overall and science GPA. Thanks again.

Its not easy getting accepted to DH.. Having a BS or BA doesn't guarantee that someone will get accepted, especially since DH is #1 profession 🙂 rated 2012. Seats are limited and people can be waiting for years to get into the program. I am a DH and have many, many friends that had to wait 4-5 years to get accepted to the program. I got accepted to program just with High school diploma ( just lucky), few years back when noone knew what a Dental Hygienist was. Those classes YES will count towards sciences classes but if what you want is to be dentist, don't wast your time going to HYG school. But yea, its guarantee good $$$ for sure to be a DH.. Good luck, I wish i had gone straight to Dentistry instead of DH thought, now I am older and watching little kids getting accepted without much experience in the field.. haha, I sounded very old and jealous
**DH is really worthy in terms of $$$

I would say just work your butt off on the science GPA and raise it to at least 3.2-3.3 and you'll be fine. As far as the DAT, just take the test as if you have a 2.0 and you need the best score as possible. No need to go to DH school IMO.

Look into USC's DH/DDS 6-year program. Just got initiated this year. My colleague was fortunate enough to be a part of the ~20 or less entering class of 2012. He also has an average GPA of around 3.0-3.3 overall. USC's DH program closely monitors every student to ensure they do well so that they can be prepared for Ostrow's DDS program. GOOD LUCK.

Seats may be limited for a particular DH program, but it certainly is not limited on a national basis. You mean your friends were competitive enough to get into a program but had to wait 4-5 years to get accepted because the waiting list was that long or where there other intervening factors?
