Hey guys,

So as I'm filling out AMCAS last night, a foggy, unclear memory comes into my head - the fact that senior year or high school (maybe junior year?) I decided to register in the "College Now" program at a CUNY for a class. Maybe it was on government?

The longer I sat there, the more clear this became. I never went to the class. I didn't even know what "withdrawing" was or why I would do that. I figured I would be dropped if I didn't go. Like actually, not even one class.

I remember getting a letter in the mail a year later warning me of my "academic status" for "failing to maintain a GPA of X.X"

I laughed because I was at a top-10 school and my city university was warning me about my academic status. I never even enrolled! All this for one class I signed up for in HS?

So I called the registrar and it turns out I have a transcript, which they can't discuss over the phone. I'm waiting for it to get to my house (my parents' house - I live overseas).

The college has WU and WN - unexcused withdraw (counts as an F) and non-attendance withdraw (counts as a W). I'm assuming from the probation letter that I got a WU (or an F).

Obviously I'll wait to see that the transcript says, but what do you recommend I do? It's so unfair that a course that I thought would be dropped if I didn't attend it changes my overall GPA from a 3.69 to a 3.61. I know it's my fault, and that I should have known better, but I didn't know anything about withdrawal policies in high school!

My current plan is:
--If I have an WU/F call up the advisors of the program begging it to be changed to a WN citing the fact that I never attended the course.

--If I can't change anything, what do I do?! Where do I explain it?? This isn't me whining away a C because I sucked at a class or couldn't handle the work. I literally never went and didn't even realize I would remain enrolled.

Someone please give me some advice. 🙁
I'm freaking out about this.

well first off, if you get a 3.61, it is not bad. so whatever happens, you are still in the race, however, i will try and contact the school or appeal the grade if it happens to be an F. if this doesn't work out, then you just have to stick with it and make sure you report it on amcas ( dont try to hide the grade, schools will eventually find out and that would be more trouble)and maybe explain it on your interviews if asked. good luck to ya.

don't worry, i'm gonna send the transcript in no matter what, but i'm just praying i can resolve this. if not, where do i explain it? if, indeed, i was on academic probation of some sort, then i can explain that and the F in that box on AMCAS i guess...

i'm sorry, i just can't get over how absurd it is that i might have to say "yes" to institutional action because some city college thought my GPA was too low after registering for a course in a program for HS students. i never enrolled there! i never thought about it again! how can this count on my record?? ugh.

If it's any consolation, adcoms will see the F listed in a "HS" category on your list of courses and will see that it isn't representative of your body of work. If it does end up counting as an F, you may wish to include a tidbit it about it in your personal statement or secondary prompts. Overall I don't think it will be a big deal. The F came out of ignorance and isn't representative of the rest of your undergrad career.

personally, i dont think it would hinder your chances of getting an interview, certainly it would come up during the interview, i say you just explain it to them. thats all.

hey guys! so it was a W! i don't know why it's not clarified as a certain type of W, but the trancript says W and as far as I know that's not factored into your AMCAS GPA right?

also, no sign of any kind of probation or academic warning.
i'm freeeee!

Yup. 🙂 Congrats on everything working out.

God, you are fine, relax, keep going, it is all good.

Count your blessings today that that was a W and not a F.
