Does anyone have any knowledge/experience about reapplying for Rad Onc, but they already have a PGY2-PGY5 position in a different specialty? Is there a waiver that needs to be completed??? Your input is much appreciated! THANKS.

Very program dependent. Some programs will take you, some will not with a previous residency. I matched even though I'm coming from derm, and I know one person who did IM and was going to start heme/onc fellowship but matched into rad onc later. So it's possible. I guess the question that is very important to answer is: WHY the change now, given that you've done a whole specialty in something else. It's doable though

Correction, I'm actually an intern and have yet to start the PGY2 year in the advanced residency. I applied initially for radiation oncology in the NRMP MATCH 2012, didn't match and "scrambled" into a PGY2 advanced position. Has anyone else been in this scenario before? and if so, what was the course of action.

What specialty did you match into? I guess it depends. If it's really far removed from rad onc, it may be a harder case to make than if you matched into something that I guess could be somewhat more related. For example, I also know someone who started rads residency, thought about doing interventional/interventional onc. but later switched to rad onc altogether. If you can make a case like that, it may be easier than if you matched into something completely unrelated I suppose. Also try to figure out what went wrong-scores, research, etc. Also realize that I guess you have to stick it out for 45 days in your advanced position in order to not have a match violation (per Aprogdirector) as I asked him about this as well.

This would actually account for a match violation. If a program accepts you and you've already matched at another advanced position, the radonc program can get into serious trouble. Unless the program you've matched in releases you.

I actually switched into Radiation Oncology after being matched into a categorical surgical program. It is very doable. You need to talk to your current program director and tell them that Rad/Onc would be a better fit for you and you'd like to apply for a position. If you're a resident in good standing and your program director likes you & you have good stats (med school grades/scores/etc) then you can go ahead and apply to programs that have open positions. I haven't checked in a while but I think they're on the ARRO website (which I think is now in the ASTRO website). Good luck!!
