I need some advice... I have an interview at AZCOM tomorrow. My flight leaves in 6 hours. I was accepted to WVSOM and Nova, and I interviewed at UNECOM and VCOM. I have an interview lined up at CCOM. I am also waiting to hear from UMDNJ (who said my application was reviewed but not considered strong enough for this round of interviews), PCOM (both campuses), and NYCOM. My family is in NY, and I would love to be as close to NY as possible. I LOVED WVSOM, and I want to go there of the two I was accepted to. UNECOM meets Saturday to decide my acceptance or rejection.

AZCOM is so far away, so hot (I love the snow), and there 3rd and 4th years are not set up for you. You must find your own rotations.

Should I go to the interview or cordially decline?

Sounds like you answered your own question.

As I was writing it, I thought the same thing. I am still curious what the non-biased world out there thinks. It is so easy for me to cry on the phone with my mom and say I am not going, but I need a more rational, less emotional look on the issue from all of you lovely people 🙂.

You know, people are always bashin AZCOM for not havin rotations already set up for their students. i'll have you know that i interviewed at AZCOM, the thing is, they do and can set up the rotations for you if you feel that you dont want to do it yourself, however, they leave the option for you to find your own rotations, makin it more flexible for you to go wherever you choose. Since you are concerned about leavin your family or what not, you can go to AZCOM, stay there for the first 2 years and do your rotations at NY if you wanted for the 3rd and 4th year. What other school can provide that option??

My thing is, you should think about it, but if you have your heart set on that WVSOM, then cancel your interview and save some money. If you are still checkin out your options, then go to it.

It would be beneficial for you to see the school in person, but it is a long and expensive trip I'm sure. Ask yourself what attracted you AZCOM initially that prompted you to apply? Tough decision, good luck!

I was not "bashing" AZCOM; I was simply restating information I read in materials and heard from students. Thank you for your thoughts though.

I interviewed at AZCOM yesterday. It is my top choice but I TOTALLY understand that moving that far is quite an undertaking. I absolutely loved the school and the heat was a nice change from the 50s of Connecticut. Of course it also has its drawbacks and negatives but overall it was a great experience.

Thanks for the input. I look at the 50's here on the East Coast as a nice change from the 90's we once had. I love the cold weather and the snow; I have been a competitive skiier for years. I know AZCOM is beautiful and has a lot to offer, but after two deaths in the family and my mother going through heart surgery this past year, I have a deeper desire to be close to home. Medical school is what you take out of it, so it really does not matter all that much where the school is located. For me, I know I will study with a greater ease in my heart if I am closer to my family. Good luck with all of your interviews and acceptances!

i declined to even submit a secondary for similar reasons. i love seasons and dislike hot weather, so i don't think i'd enjoy living in the phoenix area. if you've already got an acceptance to a school you love, there's no need to interview at a school that you know won't work for you simply because of location. i get the feeling that even if you went to the azcom interview and thought it was the greatest school ever, you still probably wouldn't wind up there because of your family issues.

congrats on the interview, but i say decline. 🙂

Thank you for responding. In the past, I have always noticed your posts as being well thought out, educated, and unbiased, so I really value your opinion. Good luck, and congratulations on your acceptance and interview invites!

Should I leave in six hours for AZCOM? Huh? You shouldn't even be considering this. It would be unprofessional to bail. The school invested their resources in you and are planning on you coming. It's just like bailing on thanksgiving dinner with the family just before you get there. The food is already cooking, so go eat your food, smile and nod - then wrap your application up after having the knowledge of what AZCOM has to offer. To not go would be a stain on your professional conduct, waste the schools resources, and prevented an earnest applicant from interviewing in your spot had you let them know further in advance. You shouldn't base you decisions on weather and other BS, but which school can prepare you best. You are starting a career not retirement plans. 😡

Truth.

Besides, the school is totally kick ass. I had an amazing interview Monday, after which I am strongly of the opinion that AZCOM is the premier DO school in the country. Their numbers really speak for themselves...

The rotation issue is being addressed. Besides, there are some pluses to going preceptor for 1/2 or so of the rotations (lots of hands on stuff), and ward for the other 1/2. I, for one, appreciate the flexibility AZCOM allows in letting us rotate wherever we want. I could do all NW rotations because I am from that area...that's huge for me, because, like you, I don't see myself establishing a life in Phoenix.

Good luck with everything.

Wow, that was harsh. First off, my interview is tomorrow. Yes, that is late notice, but it is not as though I will just not show up. I will call them today to let them know. I understand they invested their resources in me and someone else could have interviewed in my spot, but the thought to not go did not come up until I received acceptance letters this week, during which time I have been out of town interviewing at other schools. I am not basing my decision solely on weather; if you read the rest of this thread, I am basing it on factors such as proximity to my family and curriculum. Now, wether that is important to you or not is none of my business. It is important to me. WVSOM, with it's PBL track, is by far the best fit for me curriculum-wise. As far as location, I would love for it to be closer to home. However, AZCOM offers no such curriculum, nor is it any closer to home. That is why I do not want to go. I appreciate your thoughts, and I wish you the best of luck in your process.

I really appreciate your thoughts, and the idea of compeleting my rotations anywhere in the US is appealing. I still feel, though, if I can go to school closer to family for all four years, not just the last two years, it would be better for me. Good luck!

I have officially declined my interview at AZCOM. Let me say, the admissions office was amazing when I called. I explained my situation of being accepted to other schools better suited for me and how I did not want to tie up the school's or committee's time in interviewing me and making a decision while another, better suited student could have their time. They were very thankful for me calling, wished me the best of luck, and assured me that they hold no ill will towards students who find a school better suited for them. They don't want their school filled with students who are not happy or would rather be elsewhere. Thank you for all of your thoughts, good, bad, or otherwise. Good luck with all of your applications!

Good choice! Nothing against AZCOM. If you don't feel like it's a fit for you, don't waste the cash. With 2 acceptances in hand... you're fine passing it up.

that's great that they were nice about it, and i totally disagree with the above poster that it's unprofessional to decline the interview. in fact, you'd be wasting their time and resources more by showing up and going through the whole interview process for a school you're not interested in attending. hey, it might even give the interviewers a somewhat less hectic day and the ability to spend more time with interested applicants.

Thank you. I am very happy with my decision and am at peace with it. I have had a tough few years in life, and I have to believe that fate will take me where I should be. I appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.
