I am a currently a 2nd year general surgery resident looking to switch from general surgery to EM. I would like to switch hopefully into the PGY-2 position since I have already finished my intern year. Any suggestions as to how to find out which program have openings? What is the best way of applying for EM for a non-traditional applicant. Someone please give me advice regarding this matter.

check out www.saem.org, there's listings of open spots.

I'm not sure if you'll be able to switch to a PGY2 EM spot at a 1-3, or 1-4 program, but easily at a 2-4 program. If you don't know much about this issue, I would also point you to www.saem.org, as they have listings of all programs.

As someone pointed out previously in another thread (can't remember which thread)...SAEM isn't always up to date. Their suggestion was to be aggressive and start contacting programs via email, phone, snail mail or whatever to see what they have available. I agree with Mount...you are not likely to get a lot of credit for time already served in a 3 year program...at most they might give you credit for part of a year but not the whole thing. The 2-3-4 programs would be more likely to drop you straight into a PGY-2/EM-1 slot. SAEM does have all the programs listed with their format...ie 1-3, 2-4, etc....
