Hi,

I am a non trad student and a little confused. I applied this year just to see what happens and to get familiar with the process. I applied to following schools:

DMU - Interview 1/27
LECOM-Brad Accepted 1/6
TUCOM-Nev Accepted 1/10
WVCOM - Declined Interview
NSUCOM - Completed Secondary

I have a MS in Aerospace Engineering with good GPA and average MCAT. My problem is TUCOM only gives 2 weeks to decide. I liked vegas area and family is nearby which would help with childcare (baby girl due 2/7). The people at both TUCOM and LECOM were great. I am little apprehensive with TUCOM since it's a new school and the facility is a leased building. I am worried about how stable the program is and how it might affect my residencies down the road. LECOM-Brad is also new, however, it seemed a little more organized.

I am looking forward to my DMU interview. I heard it's a great school. I dont know what it's like to live in Des Moines. Been in FL all my life. I think if I can get an interview with NSUCOM, it would be perfect. I think it might be at the caliber of DMU with the FL lifestyle.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Congratulations on your acceptances!

I imagine Roger Corbman did address the deposit notification as he always has when I have been present. Contact him and let him know of your situation and I think he would more than likely accommodate you.

I am not sure what you mean by the stability of the program. There are only 2 medical schools in NV. UN-Reno SOM and Touro University Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine. Touro MI students have been rotating in the Las Vegas area for sometime now so Touro is not a new name. Touro has acquired the current facilities under a long term agreement that would extend past the duration of your entire medical education there.

Third year rotations have been set with 3 rotational sites of which you rank and are placed based on lottery. The 3 sites are (1) University Medical Center (UMC) & Valley Hospital, (2) Sunrise Hospital, (3) St. Rose Hospital. UMC is level 1 trauma and Sunrise is level 2. UNR SOM students also rotate at UMC.

How would this affect your possibilities in residency programs? I think it would be good based on the amount of opportunities here. Valley and UMC also have residencies available. Additionally, from word of the DME, there will be a new dermatology residency set up. EM and Ortho are also "in the works." I would suggest that maybe you should contact Roger Corbman and other students (preferably MS-IIs) to answer your questions regarding the program here. IMHO, I believe medical school is what you make of it and before you write off any program, do more research and become better informed so you can make a decision that is right for you.

Good luck!

Congrats on your acceptance...and i hope you get into NSU!! when choosing between Lecom-B and TUCOM-NV you have to ask yourself if the PBL pathway is for you..because LECOM-B is PBL only...which means if you dont excel in that type of learning..you are in a heap of trouble.. And I think the deposit is about half price compared to TUCOM-NV (~$ 2000) ..I did not send my secondary to either school..because i was hoping i would get into NSU..which i did!! ..So my research on the 2 schools is definately not top-notch....If it were me..I would choose between DMU and NSU both of which are very well established....however im sure you've heard of the dress code/attendance policy at NSU..as well as LECOM..(not sure about the Bradenton campus..)

Also..you can apply for an extension on your deposit i think..you may want to look into that.. if its a reasonable amount of time..

Also if your numbers are good enuff..i would risk it..and not pay the deposit to those schools..unless u can actually see yourself going there..and wouldnt mind paying all that tuition money to a school that isnt your top-choice... i hope my rambling has been somewhat beneficial in your decision making.

Thank you both for your replies. Both schools had their pros and cons. What impressed me about TOURO was the anatomy lab and the low number of students/cadaver and the MERIN Research Center. Do TOURO students have have first preference for the Vegas residencies?

Also, Dr. Krueger from LECOM seemed very confident in his PBL curriculum. But you are taking a small risk.

Don't risk your chance. The door of acceptance is getting smaller. The numbers are not only factors. Pay the deposits to hold your seat (at least one) before making decision which one you will go. You don't know how many acceptances you will have.

If anyone has struggled with this decision and has some more advice, please let me know. Of the schools that I have an acceptance from, I am ranking them as follows from 1st choice to last.

NOVA - I'm from florida. Lots of growth potential. Good clinicals nearby.
TOURO-NV - family in vegas, can help with newborn. Good clinicals nearby.
KCUMB-wife's family in KS.
DMU - great school, no ties to the area.
LECOM-B - very professional school.

Thanks.

Please let us all know which school you decide on attendinig..best of luck

it is rumored that some of the residencies are going to be 'internal,' meaning that we, as tunv students, will have priority, and with the opening of a bunch of new residencies (internal med, ophtho, derm, ER, and they are working on ortho surg), the opportunity here is amazing. we are the only students to rotate through southern nevada really (UN reno has a class size of around 50, and they only send around 8 students here i think). and with University medical center being a level 1 trauma (one of the best in the nation), this is a prime spot for people interested in that. b/c of the severe dr shortage in NV, we are being welcomed with not only open arms, but a welcoming party. the whole area is really excited to have us!

and even though we are a new school, i don't feel like it at all. things are set up, and stable...there have been no 'growing pains' to speak of. and i don't know what the significance of the building being leased and not bought has anything to do with it. 😕

oh, and with merin, we have ample opportunities to get involved there. a few students worked there over the summer, and every week when they have events, we are given the chance to help out, and jump in there. its fun, if thats what you are interested in (which i am, so i love it!) 😀

good luck with the decision. 😀

Let me add that all of us MSI's at Touro had an "anatomy" class at MERIN yesterday. This consisted of our whole class going and observing a total knee replacement, while the head doc over there explained everything he did step by step. Pretty cool stuff, that only the students from Touro-NV get to experience, we all walked out of there and said..."that sure beats a normal lecture!" I think everyone else would agree...
