I need to make a decision by 5/1 to go to UT majoring in Biology or Texas A&M majoring in Animal Science. I plan to apply to vet schools in the future. A&M will be one of them. Which school will prepare me better to be a good candicate? I also found out that 2 of the required courses (Animal Nutrition and General Animal Science) are not offered at UT and I will need to enroll at A&M as non-degree students to take these two courses before I apply. Does it matter if I choose UT instead of A&M? I like both schools. But UT has been the school I always wanted to attend since I was a child. It is really hard to make a decision.

I think you should go where you think you would enjoy the most. You can always take those required courses online or in the summer. Although sometimes it helps to go to a school that has a vet school because you can make some really great connections that may help you get into vet school. If you're a strong applicant, it shouldn't make a difference where you go though

Admissions to A&M's vet school is based on a points system. 12 points are based on the rigor of your undergrad institution, and they award the same number of points for students who went to A&M as who went to UT Austin. 🙂

They are both great schools. A&M probably will have better pre-vet opportunities, activities, and advising, but in Austin you'll have a lot less pre-vet competition for shadowing and volunteer jobs. You can also take Nutrition and Animal Science online, or at Texas State in San Marcos (much closer than College Station).

Just choose the school where you'll be happier. (But Austin is the best city ever, imo 😀)

Well I may be biased but I'd go with A&M. I think it has a better air about it. A lot of my friends went to UT and when I visited, I don't know, just wasn't impressed.

The upside to UT though would be that it'd probably be easier to find experience in the form of a job due to less competition. Upside to A&M in the form of experience would be more diversified experience opportunities.

UT is gross. go with a&m!

haha I'm sorry, I'm an OU student and therefore can never encourage anyone to go to that school. but please disregard this otherwise. 😀

Go to UT. You already want to go there, and going to A&M doesn't really increase your chances for vet school. You can also take nutrition and animal science at Texas State in San Marcos, while you live in Austin.

I'm just now reading previous posts and realizing I'm repeating everything already said. So, ditto for all the reasons to go to UT.

When it comes to undergrad, the best school is always the one you love most.

Thanks so much for all the replies. I will need to think carefully and dig into more information. Hopefully I can come up with a decision I will not regret.
