Hey everyone !

So I have decided to go into medicine field and I need help confirming my plan.

URM- May be considered disadvantaged- Female

I graduated from a high ranked SUNY with a bachelors in International Relations with a cUGPA of a 2.58. I also took a few classes at CUNY after wihich brings my cUGPA up to a 2.63.

My uniqueness is that I am about to graduate with my masters in teaching next spring with a grad GPA of 3.8. This will give me a overall GPA of about 2.8.

My current plan of action :

Enroll in CUNY as a 2nd degree student, Retake Bio 1 and Calc 1 ( Had a C- ) and also take all my pre requisites . I also plan to take Biostats and Bio Chem . possible a semester of physiology and molecular biology) . Im giving My self about 3 years. The goal is to hit that 3.0 mark so I won't get screened out. expecting to apply spring of 2025 so I will be taking my MCAT winter 2024 app. Goal score of 520

Welcome to the forums.

I read through your plan and have a couple of suggestions/clarifications. Your graduate GPA will be included in your cGPA for DO programs but not MD programs. For MD programs you will want to keep this in mind as it means your starting point is a bit lower. Aiming for DO programs will likely be necessary given your GPA which is just fine. Three years to complete coursework and take the mcat is a reasonable time frame. Aiming for a 520 is good but be advised that less than 2% of test takers achieve that. Median accepted MCAT for MD programs is a 511-12 which is roughly the 85th percentile. When you go to prepare for the mcat make sure you treat it as a full-time job. Having a background in education will help differentiate you from the masses of premeds (I was a teacher and there are a couple others in my program). That being said, take your time, focus on performing well and take things one step at time. Best of luck to you.
