Hi all

did a little searching and was unable to find a thread that matched the question I'm after.

I'm a US/CDN citizen (dual) studying in Australia, wanting to do my electives back in either the US or Canada during Dec 2011 and March 2012, all places I've browsed say they require at least 6-8months lead time and all of them require a cover letter / statement of intent along with a CV.

What exactly do I write in this cover letter? I want to get into either Emergency Medicine or Internal Medicine (Critical Care).

Could you guys give me a brief overview of some points on where to start?

Thanks everyone!

When I applied for an away, it was a formality more than anything. I would mention the following:

1. Describe where you are in your training (including what rotations you did, how much more remains, etc). If I recall correctly, Australian medical schools are 5 years long, so '4th year' would mean different things.

2. Write a paragraph explaining your interest in the field. Why do you like EM? Why are you interested in Critical Care?

3. What you hope to get out of the rotation.

Also maybe worth mentioning that you will not need help with getting a visa.
