The diversity prompts are not about ethnicity; they're about what's cool about you and what you bring to to the Class.I am currently trying to draft ideas for secondary essays and the "diversity essay" is one that I am struggling with. I am a middle class, white boy from an affluent area without any hurdles to education. The only thing unique about me that I can think of is that I grew up very underweight, and people always asked me if I was anorexic even though I wasn't and it made me feel like an outsider for something I could not control.
Everything else that is different about me has to do with my family background so I don't know if I should write about it since it didn't specifically happen to me even though it was very impactful to who I am today. My brother is gay and my parents didn't accept him so he became severely depressed. Several people in my family have mental illness (schizo, bipolar, alcoholism) and I have seen the negative effects of all of these. Is this a topic to stay away from since it didn't happen to me?
Thanks!
introspection is a required trait for a doctor.
The prompt is also not about your family, but about you. You can talk about your brother's illness in the PS or "Why Medicine?" prompts.
