Hi, I am 5th year New Zealand Medical student on maternity leave at the moment. I am trying to organize an elective in central Sydney. From what I read on SDN, sounds like Royal Prince Alfred Hospital is the most central and busy. I have no preference for the field but wanted smth that I might not experience at Auckland. Or perhaps sombody knows a great consultant there who could be a great mentor for 3 weeks....
Any advice would be greatly apreciated!

Does anyone know how long it takes to organize an elective with RPA and how much does it cost?

Also, can GP's in Australia sub-specialize in low-risk Obstetrics? (I am considering it for an elective as well)

Thanks very much,
Daria

Quite a few of my friends have been/will be going to Australia for their elective and most of them started the process around a year in advance. Can be quite lengthly once you add in medical exams, visas, etc...

If you're coming from NZ, there shouldn't be too many hassles organizing this elective.

Also, as you say, RPA is pretty big and pretty busy. Not sure how much it would cost there, but generally it's $500 for 4 weeks, $650 for 8 weeks. Other big hospitals you might want to consider are Royal North Shore, Westmead, Prince of Wales and Concord. I'd get in touch with them ASAP, as it's normally a first-come-first-served thing, and most of the above are pretty popular.
