Hi everyone,
I am currently in the process of filling out an EOI (expression of interest) form for a PhD research program in psycho-oncology. The researchers involved have recently published a paper on clinical pathways for the screening, assessment and and management of anxiety and depression in adult cancer patients in routine cancer care. The focus of the PhD will be on the evaluation of implementation strategies.
This program really appeals to me, so I am working my way through the form, and just wanted some feedback on the final question. The question asks about the student's interests for being interested in pursuing a PhD in implementation science in the cancer care context, and what skills or research questions come to mind.
I haven't written it up yet, but I have made some dot points and would just like some feedback/tips. This is what I have so far:
Reasons for being interested:
-Patients are provided with the medical attention they need, but the psychological aspects of their treatment are often ignored. Illness can have a significant psychological impact on patients and families, and I am keen to work towards reducing this impact through the application of research to illness.
-Can see the need for efficacious interventions
-High burden of cancer in society
Research questions:
-Cost-effectiveness, acceptability, efficiency, effectiveness – positive health outcomes
-In turn, how will it influence practice
-Barriers and facilitators
-Attitudes of healthcare professionals
-Target population
-Equitable access – how to access everyone
-Why do some people respond to intervention and others don’t
-How much of intervention needed
-Congruence with pre-existing values, priorities and behavioural drivers of the research group and target
Am I on the right track?
Many thanks in advance!
