Hello,

I have questions about seeking licensure in NYS.

I am graduating in 2014 from another state and am planning on getting a license in NYS after graduating. I am finishing up my internship and was planning on submitting the intern hours to NYS before I leave. There is very little information on their site about submitting intern hours from another state to NYS.

The NYS BOP website states than 1040 intern hours must be submitted, which cannot be earned while school is in session.

In contradiction, it also states that hours earned in another state may be accepted as long as the hours earned are acceptable by that state's BOP.

So, does that mean that hours earned in my home state that were worked while the semester was in session, which were accepted by my state's BOP, would be accepted by NYS?

Also, I found a small note on the NYS site saying that graduates of a pharmD program are exempt from the intern experience requirement. It refers you to another part of the site for details, but no details are to be found. Does this mean I do not even have to bother sending my intern hours to the NYS BOP? Thank you.

Submitting the 1,040 hours is only required if you want to sit for the exam before you graduate. IPPE and APPE hours do not count as part of the 1,040 - basically, you can only submit the hours worked from your pharmacy intern job you held on the side. However, if you want to sit for the exam after you graduate, then you do not need to submit those hours.

They also say that the hours worked during the semester do not count but if you call them up, they will most likely tell you to just submit whatever you have as long as you have 1,040.

You do not have to submit hours especially since you will be taking the compounding exam after you graduate. I hope you sent in the form to apply to take the compounding boards.

Thanks to all who responded. The above post is what I was getting at. I would like to take the Part 3 in January of 2014 (before I graduate), as in case I do not pass, I can get another try in June. I am planning on submitting the hours for this purpose. I have worked well over 2000 hours at my intern job, however i am slightly shy (slightly) of the 1040 earned only in the summers of P2 and P3 years. What is the best plan?

Call them and ask if you can just put the first 1,040 overall hours you worked instead of putting down strictly the hours you worked during the summers. Honestly, they just want documentation that you fulfilled the 1,040 hours, regardless of what part of the year you worked as 1,040 hours is 1,040 hours no matter how you look at it. Also, won't you have enough hours by the time you submit Form 1 and 4 by November 1st?

Additionally, if you worked a set amount of hours per week throughout the year, you can indicate it at the bottom of page 1 of Form 4 and skip page 3 and 4 altogether.

I took the exam last June (right before the start of APPE rotations) and documented my intern hours both during the semester and during summers. I was told at my school that this was okay. Didn't have any issues.
