Hi guys!

For a P/L chrome denture, I am aware that you have to try in the frame first before adding wax on and taking the bite. I am just wondering, how do I take the bite if the patient is edentulous on the upper? I am supposed to be making a FU acrylic denture as well. Thanks!

Just to add on, the patient has an existing full upper acrylic denture but he does not want to make a copy denture, but a totally brand new one. Would it be ok to ask him to wear his existing denture and then take a bite record?

If the existing upper full denture has worn-out teeth (as is likely the case) or if the patient wants a new upper denture (as you state is the case), then it's best to make the new upper complete denture at the same time as the lower partial. You will need to make a really good (border molded) upper impression, then make an upper record base and wax rim from this, and then try in your lower framework against the upper wax rim. (You won't normally gain anything useful at all by taking a bite record against the patient's old upper denture.) After that the new upper denture can be waxed up. have teeth set at the same time as the lower denture, and tried in again together for adjustments before processing to acrylic.

This whole series of steps is kind of finicky and there are a lot of ways to mess up. You really need to get one knowledgeable and reasonable clinic faculty member to walk you through the whole set of appointments. No way should your school be expecting you do figure all this out solo.

What he said. But, in a pinch, the old denture could work for a bite reg if the teeth are not too far worn down. If you are working with an outside lab, you could take the bite reg with the old denture and then ask them to open up the bite X number of mm.

Ideally, you should make both upper and lower at the same time. But if you only need to make a lower RPD to fulfill your graduation requirement, or if pt can only afford to pay for 1 arch at this time, or if your instructor allows you to just make the lower RPD, I think you can do this:

Step 1: use the pt’s existing upper denture to take a facebow record. Then take the impression of his existing upper denture. Pour it and mount it to the articulator first.

Step 2: take the bite registration of the lower metal framework (with wax rims on the lower edentulous areas) against the patient’s existing upper denture. And then use this registration record to mount the lower cast.
