I have been reading this forum for the past year. I know people do this all the time so I was wondering if some of you can give me some feedback on my list of residency programs I am applying to?

I am a DO student that is couples matching (she is doing family medicine). 2 digit score of 80 on COMLEX 1. B student, hovering around a 3.0 with an A in psychiatry and pediatrics during 3rd year. Solid grades with other 3rd yr rotations ranging from A- to Bs. No research in psychiatry, but plenty of research in other fields before medical school. Plenty of leadership experience before medical school. Lots of volunteer stuff before and during medical school. Average LORs with 1 excellent LOR from psychiatrist.

Normally I wouldn't do this, but I am having a hard time gauging my chances at some of these programs. I picked a handful that I don't have a shot at, but also picked some that I should easily be able to get (i think).

While nothing is given, I am looking for some sort of reassurance that these 48 programs should be enough (or advice that I should also add some more lesser known/ community programs). I hope to get 15-20 interviews and go on about 15 interviews. Your feedback would be tremendously appreciated!

48 programs seems excessive, but it's your dime, I guess. Your profile doesn't suggest super crisis to me. It seems like a pretty good mix of program difficulty.

Agree that you probably don't need to apply in "crisis mode" (I like that).

What you may want to do is look a bit more closely at the regions of the country where you most want to live, and apply a bit more deeply there, while still casting broadly for programs that you think have good national rep.

For a couples match, I would argue that you are right to cast a wide net. No sense in interviewing in locations that your mate didn't get invited to interview at (and vice versa) so that will likely whittle down the list some. I think it's better to start off over-applying and then narrow things down once you get the interview invitations than to realize after it's too late that you didn't apply to enough places.

Thanks everyone for your replies so far. It's helpful.

OPD - i would like to end up in the Mid-Atlantic States or the Northeast, but I would rather get the best training possible versus staying in a certain location. That is why most of my programs are university based instead of community based.

Yea I don't know if 48 is too much, but I wanted to make sure I get 15-20 interviews. :xf:

I wouldn't be worried about your chances, especially since your spouse is applying to a non-competitive speciality--family practice. However, given the couples match and if you're not worried about the money, I would go ahead and apply to the 48 programs and go on as many interviews as you're comfortable with. Part of that is not because you won't get in, but rather you both have to find a place that you'll be happy at. You may also not agree on locations and going on more interviews just gives you more options.

I went through the couples match with my spouse. We went on 14 interviews. That was not necessary from a match stand point, but it was nice to have more places we could agree on. One nice thing is that a lot of programs will communicate with your spouses program. In some ways it could actually be helpful.

Good luck! :luck:

Nothing to contribute, just want to give a voice of support to anyone applying in the couples match. For everyone hoping to find a happy home in the Match, those applying couples match make things harder exponentially. Glad my wife is not in medicine (for soooo many reasons).

Hope you get what you're looking for, psych23. Let us know how it all turns out...
