Hi guys! Any input is appreciated, I have to stay relatively close to home for family reasons but would like to add a couple more schools to my list and would appreciate any advice on the current list I have! I am taking a gap year but my plans for that are up in the air, if there is anything that I'm lacking that you guys think I should work on during this year, please let me know 🙂.
  1. cGPA: 3.67 and sGPA: ~3.55 (strong upward trend 3.2/3.5/3.85/4) I only have the first semester of senior year in but I think I'm 4.ing this semester, too. Granted, I only took 10 credits both of my last semesters but I divided up all of my credits evenly in those four sections.
  2. MCAT 515 127/129/130/129
  3. State of residence: Michigan
  4. Ethnicity: White/Middle Eastern Low SES (Below Poverty Level)
  5. Clinical experience (volunteer) 150 hours
    • 50 hours transporting patients in a hospital
    • 100 hours talking/painting/playing games with people in a neuro-rehab center (on-going)
  6. Clinical experience (paid)
    • 200 hours as a Home-Health Aide for a man with cerebral palsy (on-going)
  7. Research
    • 4 years in a psychology lab interested in Sleep Deprivation
    • Lab Manager this year (responsible for training/hiring new RA's, trouble-shooting problems and helping lead lab meetings)
    • 2 poster presentations (at university, no conferences), won 1st place award in my section both times
  8. Shadowing
    • 40 hours primary care
    • planning on shadowing a radiologist and endocrinologist before applying
  9. Non-Clinical Volunteering ~300 hours
    • 50 hours tutoring middle school kids in an under-served area
    • 80 hours at a homeless shelter for families (made dinner for 30 people and played with kids) (on-going)
    • 140 hours crisis text line (on-going)
    • 48 hours at a music camp for kids with special needs
  10. Working (Non-Clinical)
    • Local Campus Retail Location: 4 years (20 hours a week first two years, 27-29 hours a week last two years)
      • promoted to store manager end of my second year and another promotion shortly after that
      • currently I help oversee seven locations, assist in ordering product and teaching others to order product, lead store manager meetings, came up with multiple changes to streamline operations, conduct promotional interviews, etc. (large leadership role)
    • Worked at fast-food Mexican place for two summers
  11. Anything else not listed you think might be important
    • I went on a study-abroad last summer, not sure if this is important or interesting but it was meaningful for me because it was my first "vacation" and I gained a lot from it, definitely one of my favorite experiences during college
Tentative School List
All Michigan MD schools (6)

1) What did you study with your study abroad opportunity?

2) How many times have you interacted at recruitment opportunities with admissions recruiters, especially those representing the six Michigan medical schools? Other networking with current medical students?

3) Get those shadowing hours up to 100 total.

4) Being a lab manager is not research. More like non-clinical employment.

1) the history of neuroscience and its relation to art history and philosophy
2) I've gone to a couple of events and talked to friends who are M1's at Michigan medical schools about how they like the curriculum
3) I was not aware that I needed 100 hours of shadowing, I will be spending a week with the endocrinologist and radiologist so hopefully I will have enough.
4) I only recently got that position within my lab, I still assist with data coding and analysis, have worked on my own project, setting up participants with modified EEG, etc. The research I've presented are graduate student projects I have assisted on but I have spent a good amount of time learning research design and hypothesis testing from them.

Thank you for your reply!
