Hey SDN I would appreciate some help finalizing my school list. I'm non-traditional from CA. 3.15 sGPA, 3.3 cGPA. I will take the MCAT this summer, and I feel confident that I will score well. I have been consistently scoring in the low 30s for a couple months. Lots of shadowing, clinical experience, research, and volunteer hours, and solid LORs including one from a DO.

Touro (CA, NV, and maybe NY)
Western (Pomona and Lebannon)
PNWU
RVU
AZCOM
SOMA
PCOM
NYIT
CUSOM

Ideally I would stay on the west coast, but let me know if I should remove or add any schools to my list. Obviously my GPAs are low, so I just want to make sure I don't get screened out from any of these schools. Thanks

If your MCAT turns out as planned, then simply apply where you most want to go. I personally would take off PNWU and SOMA

and add:

KCU (not sure if they still have a gpa requirement)
NSU
DMU
KCOM
and maybe MUCOM

Thanks for your input O Grady. I will look at those additional schools more closely. Why would you take off PNWU and SOMA?

I think taking PNW off because they are heavy on Pacific-NW residents only (Cali does not count).

It's not that they are terrible schools, there are just many other schools I would rather go to. As for PNWU, they aren't as regionally biased as the above poster makes them seem, as I'm not from the NW and everyone from my UG school who applied got in.

SOMA is different in that their curriculum is only ~1 year in classrooms, and you start clinical education 2nd year. This could be good or bad, depending on what you want. I wanted a more traditional 2 and 2, so I didn't apply there.

According to their website:

Class of 2018 78% are from the PNW
2017 80%
2016 85%
2015 93%
2014 87%
2013 84
2012 77%

Maybe they don't have as many applications from OOS, maybe they do favor, or maybe not many people from out of the region matriculate. But these are still fairly high numbers for a region IMO

I stand corrected
