My mind is spinning, and I may be better at thinking my way through this tomorrow, but in case I'm not: anyone have tips or suggestions on personal statements for SMP applications?

Did you start of with your AMCAS PS and just edit more? Or did you start fresh? I edited my AMCAS statement several times over the course of months. obviously I don't have that kind of time for SMPs and am having some difficulty since it seems like the approach is a little different, and most schools want you to address why their specific program. Should I mention the wait list positions I'm currently holding?

I'm just really at a loss for where to begin. :scared:

I used my AMCAS PS and then added about 3/4 of a page (single space) describing how that program specifically is the right fit for me. You can discuss the curricula, other specifics of the program like thesis requirement, mandatory extracurricular activities, class size, its success rate for medical school..or its location, etc. Show them you know about their program and you're not just applying because it's the 20th SMP you've heard of

What if you don't have an AMCAS PS already written? I've read lots of advise about tweaking a med school PS into an SMP PS... but I haven't written that yet, and my attempts to write one so far haven't been fruitful. For people who applied before going through AMCAS, what did you do for the SMP personal statements?

SMP statement really care about your motivation for doing the program and what you plan to do with it. Some also would like to hear plans on where you are headed in the future and how you plan to do that. They want to understand why you want to be there not really understand who you are like med schools do. So just answer the question directly and to the point don't fluff them with power words just be direct but also be smart on how you word things. Don't tell LECOMs post bacc that you see the program a stepping stone for example. If the program has a medical school you are interested in talk about how the program will let you showcase yourself so that the adcoms will select you. Tell them about your interest in their medical school and why you like that medical school. Have good reasons to be in the area that med school or SMP is in and no going to med school there is not a good reason, they want to know what draws and will keep you there.

This is great advice! Thanks!

Keep it coming!
