Has anyone here had any experience with switching programs?
I'm in a malignant, poorly run OB/Gyn program and I desperately need to leave. Unfortunately there are no open PGY I spots on the usual sites that list openings and rumor has it sometimes programs don't list their open spots at all. Do I just start contacting all programs I'm interested in now or wait until I see openings? What do I write to the PDs of the programs I'm interested in?

Thanks!

There is no single centralized list of open residency slots, and yes some programs do not even list if they have a spot. Some PD's simply don't want the 100's of responses such ads generate, and would rather work on word-of-mouth from other PD's.

I believe ACOG might have a list on their website, but it sounds like you know that already.

Yes, the best thing to do is start contacting other programs. The hard question is when to tell your PD. I favor looking for spots first, then if you find a spot that looks tempting alerting your PD and then interviewing. If you don't get another spot, it can make your current position uncomfortable.
