A crop duster pilot has been accidentally exposed to a high concentration of an agricultural organophosphate insecticide. If untreated, the cause of death from such a poisoning would probably be
A) Cardiac arrhythmia
B) Congestive heart failure
C) Gastrointestinal bleeding
D) Hypertension
E) Respiratory failure

Wow this brings back old memories from 1st year med school...and so my memory is a fragmented.

When I think of organophosphates, I think of chemical warfare agents such as sarin. But what comes to mind is that organophosphates are irreversible inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase at the neuromuscular junction (?). Hence, I would favor an answer that involves paralysis...and people would most likely die of respiratory paralysis.

My answer is E. But I could be barking up the wrong tree here.
